Hi I'm a newbie here and I have a question....

I just started trucking school and will go out with a trainer for 30 days. I'll probably get experience for a few years before I consider alternative.

Here's my question- my wife's uncle is an owner operator in CA, has probably 15-20 years driving and the guy makes bank without even leaving Califorina really....I think he did mention Vegas runs....but that's it. He told me that he works with different brokers, and averages $2k or more weekly and he's home every night.

If my math is correct....thats $8k monthly minimum, and he's told me that he's seen more than that monthly. From what I'm reading on alot of these forms....an owner operator would have to work 300 plus days out the year, coast to coast to see figures like that if they're lucky.

How is this guy making this kind of money not leaving Califorina and home every night??? He does tell me that he drives his butt off every day.....but to see that kind of money.....what is this guy doing.....does he have local broker connections or something???

I would ask him more questions but he barely speaks English and I don't speak spanish, so it's kind of hard....alot of times I'm communicating with him through my wife because she speaks spanish and I don't want to bug him like that with a million different questions.

Thanks for any feedback on this

2K gross a week ain't that great really. 1000 miles, $2 a mile. Don't get me wrong, it's OK but calm down. You have to factor in the expenses an O/O has that comes out of that $2000, what does he net a week? As always newbies fall for the 'Our O/O make $160,000 a year!!!' Some drivers make that money and still go bankrupt. What is the NET, how much do you have in your checking account after everything is paid, fuel, insurance, truck payment, repairs, supplies, permits, taxes, plates, etc etc....

2 grand plus a week net ? Every week ? Home every night ? Possible,I guess, but not probable. Sounds to me like there was something lost in the translation,or he is hauling something you really do not want to know about.

its possible man. its prob containers though. they have it here in chicago too. i personally know people home daily, weekends off making that much and more. but let a major repair come and it can screw you. but ya its possible.

As mentioned above my dad ran from NC to NYC 3 times a week and grosses about 200k a year before factoring in his expenses and he still went bankrupt after some major repair cost

my first O/O gig. paid me 9G a week. hauling bio fuel to los angeles. 2 loads.

after all expenses, my net was 3.5G.

if it's too good to be true, it probably is. and it was. that deal lasted 2 months. it was supposed to be 3 years.

lessons from that deal. never haul for that company again. 3 years later they still don't know how to produce good quality fuel. and the only customers they can get lined up. are 3rd world customers not of this country.
