Thanks, did I tell you the one about Nebraska ? I was headed east from Idaho, word was I-80 was closed in Wyoming so I laid up at my brothers then headed out, Success I made it through Wyoming and to Ogallalah Nebraska, skie is clear and the forcast was for snow flurries so I put it to bed with relief. Morning came and had a pleasant breakfast, just a few fine snow flakes. Headed out, all is fine for a little ways, not concerned yet. Snow is getting heavier WTF no problem yet, I hear on the radio Grand Island has a foot of snow ! Hmm keep going and looking in the mirror, a bobtail truck is behind me, cars are passing me. The snow is getting pretty deep out here, where are the state trucks ? Snow Flurries ? I get on the CB and tell the cars ( if they have a CB ) you better get into a station. Bobtail truck is still behind me, by now I figure he`s following my made tracks. Sheeesh it`s getting worse, my front bumper might be plowing snow !! Bobtail truck is still behind me, whoah my tractor swerves but I get it in line again. Not good. I am at Grand Island. I keep trudging along, looking in the mirror Bobtail truck is gone. No one in sight am I going to make it ? I`m telling the westbound drivers they better stop just before Lincoln, YEAH YEAH Driver was the reply. I hit the front, sheets of rain coming down sideways, this is a cloudburst. Finnally I am out of it and I am wore out litterally. Drove on to DeMoin Iowa. Next morning news says the National Guard in Nebraska had to go out and rescue 500 people stranded on the interstate. Grand Island had 2 feet of snow. So now ya know Nebraska never sends state trucks out till the storm is over. Many may not know this but Nebraska is a higher altitutde than Kansas so the probability of what happened is more likely there than Kansas. Stay tuned I have another one !!

Only takes one winter for a driver to get some good ice stories. One clear night in March I was going up cabbage in OR bare and dry but about 3 quarters the way up I was on the smooth ice spun out, stalled, and slid into the fast lane stopping on the shoulder were the ice was more crusty with gravel. The trainer got out of the bunk and asked why didn't I have all the drives going, can't remember what it's called but I call it 4 wheel drive.:biggrin_25513: Anyway I move the selector switch over and start spinning the wheels and didn't move until I was in 3rd gear and the tires got hot. The ice turned to steam for a few hundred yards and made it. I never would want to do that again.

Then in WY I80 WB bare and dry with a light load about 1am I look over the hood hard and say to myself thats black ice and not a second later a cross wind hits me hard and moves me over the white line and know I am running out of shoulder fast. I eased up on the pedal from the metal and gentaly countered steered keeping the wheels rolling and brought it back to the lane. No expert on ice but never lock the wheels.

I had something like that happen. Always told myself I can do it. One bad hill ahead solid ice and trucks spread out all over the road on the hill. OK here goes I`m too close to home to sit here for 10 hrs. Right before I got to the top my tires spun out. A driver headed the opposite direction was sittin at the top of the hill and could probably see my eyes widen. Everything seemed fine except being sspun out and not moving forward " then " the whole truck slid sideways to the low side and stopped at the edge. So there I sat looking forward for bout 1/2 hr thinking this through. Truck is ok, I am ok so not all is lost. A truck comes from the opposite direction and by he goes " good luck driver " going down is gonna be tough dodging all those trucks spun out down there. I don`t know if he made it. I finnally decide to see if the truck would move and off I go, I`m moving forward woohoo. When I made my destination I called the dispatcher where I was and " he said " no you arent. I said ok I`ll see you in about 5 minutes cause I am. Ah Ha
