"Tethering" isn't bad, if you don't mind super-slow speeds.

Tethering is acceptable if you don't want to spend the extra money for a broadband plan. If all you want to do is check your e-mail or something every now and again it works. But then you could just do that from the phone itself. But in a pinch it's better than nothing.

With tethering via a jailbroken iPhone it doesn't cost you anything over your regular cell phone bill, since you have unlimited data to begin with. If you don't want to jailbreak your phone you will be able to pay for tethering with the new AT&T data plans. Right now unlimited is $30/mo. - the new plans are 200 MB/mo for $15 or 2 GB/mo for $25 + $20 for tethering.

If you use an aircard as I do then as long as you have cell phone service you will have internet access. Mine has a 5 Gig limit per month so I'm looking to upgrade to a new 4G phone with MiFi capability and an unlimited data plan.

See your local Sprint/ATT/Verizon dealer for more detailed info and also bring your WiFi capable laptop to ensure it will link with the phone before you lay your money on the table.
