I change every 10-11k and since I run a bit of gravel I grease u joints every 2500 and the rest of the stuff gets greased every 5k.

It is ok to extend oil change intervals if you have bypass filtration ( centrifuge or bypass filter) which makes your oil cleaner. Plus in removes the soot from your oil.

Plus, modern oils are light years ahead of anything just a decade ago. The "that's the way we always done things" mindset is so outdated. Just curious why some do not avail themselves of technological advances and modify their maintenance practices to save time and money. I realize it is hard to change, but those that bury their head in the sand usually end up getting their bum kicked.

I have gone to 12,000 a couple times. leaning toward the 12,00 mark in the near future.

I was talking to a driver who uses by-pass, fleet air, has 1.6 on it, with 700k on inframe, does oil analysis at 25k with filter change. He has 450k on current oil. I think it was a 2001 Volvo, 12.7.

Oil sampling is a very good indicator of many potential problems. EGR goes back into the intake, any coolant that the EGR cooler leaks goes with it and anything that passes the rings ends up in the oil. Oil samples will show very small traces of coolant additives (mostly sodium and potassium) in the oil when an EGR cooler first starts to leak. You'll see it on a sample report well before you'll any signs of leakage on a visual inspection of the cooler. I had to leave a coolant pressure tester on one over night before I found the leak visually, but it showed in the oil.
Oil sampling is pretty cheap compared to what it can tell you. There's a big difference in breaking down and scheduling down time. The key understanding the samples and what components show what. 1 sample tells you very little, a history of multiple samples can tell you a lot.BoxCarKidd and flood Thank this. -
I was under the impression that CJ-4 oils were just the same oil as before made emission equipment friendly. It appears they are also superior products as synthetic's and blends are supposed to be. I had bad results with oil samples years ago but new information is interesting. As for me and the old girls we'll keep it short and watch to see how the new long runners do. Has anyone seen 2,000,000 miles on a crank with these extended intervals? Thanks to all for the education.
