Some of the older trailers we had (auctioned off) were a 10' spread if I remember correctly... All of the trailers have difference spreads tho so I am not to sure of them all.. We just basically use the general rule of 9.5 tons per axle... We have 214 wheelbase tractors with heavy duty frames and axles.. The front axle is good for 14,500lbs and the drives are good for 40,000lbs

I have posted three pictures of some trailers we have... The first picture is a steel 48' universal trailer with a steel axle, the second is the newest trailers in the fleet 53' Titan Aluminum 5 axle with the steer lift (front and back) the third is a 48' fanotech closed top for food waste it has the same spread as most of our fanotech open tops...

The laws changed not that long ago that allowed for 53' trailers like this to haul the weight that they can... It's was most common to see 48 foot 6 axle steel trailers hauling around 39 tons of material... Now our garbage hauler (contracted out to another company) has changed to 5 axle closed top aluminum titans they haul up to 39.5 tons...

In our new 5 axles we can legal haul up to 42 tons inside the trailer but due to our lower gross registered weight that would put us over.. So we are restricted to 37 in the box which will give us our 58.5 ton..

John - Take these trailers for example.. I am sure you probably see these guys in Michigan.. They are hauling food waste in these trailers I believe, they could be hauling garbage in them too tho (I know when they come pick loads from the City transfer stations they are picking up food waste not garbage)... Anyhow they have 7 axles on the trailers and are only able to deploy 6 of the while in Ontario once they hit Michigan they need the 7 th axle to be legal.. They use the 3rd back one from the front of the trailer... So they are grossed out at 63,500... So this is a case in which Michigans requires lots of axles for less weight then we can haul with less axles..

I remember once asking a guy at a place in Michigan when I was an OTR guy... I was picking up steel coils at a plant somewhere on Michigan.. He had a bunch of axles and I remember him telling me what he can haul I was surprised as it wasn't that much weight compared to what I was able to haul here in Ontario with less axles..

go to local tranfer stations landfills or incinerators or in the spring time go to landscape wholesalers we deliver much as well.

also looking in to trash companies like household curbside pick up(if it aint done by the town or county) they usually pull there own trash from there tranfer stations or rent a dumpster companies 100 yd trailers and dumpsters go hand in hand
