I am trying to decide what to do with my m11 celect. It’s going to need an overhaul at some point in the near future due to high blowby and oil consumption issues or maybe replaced with a b model cat.
The truck is a heavy spec daycab that usually pulls a lowboy or flatbed. It isn’t exactly over powered however it does ok. It’s currently set at 370 and 1450 unfortunately it only pulls good between 1350 and 1650 although it will run to 1950 with light load. Can I reliably get low 400 hp levels and actually have it pull strong to the governor or is what I have as good as it gets.

I wouldn't rely only on what I am about to say, but I used to have a S60 Detroit 11.1 with a Pittsburg Power box and routinely ran it up approximately 430-450 hp. Got 850k miles out of the engine, but I would have gotten a lot more except for 2 cylinders got washed out by trickle coolant intrusion from coolant galleys in them. The other cylinders were in very good shape. Glycol never showed in any oil sample, which I did every 15k miles. Only sodium and potassium in trace amounts, which I figured were environmental or from somewhere else. Had I had the head pulled off, I could have caught in time. I was told that the those cylinder seats could have gotten slightly out of round. But I wondered if if retorquing the head bolts after it's rebuild between 100-200k miles would have prevented. I wouldn't think so because an S60 12.7L and 11.1L blocks are the same (less torque on 11.1) and head bolts are designed to stretch to maintain torque. I think the head I had was also used on 12.7s-most common head I was told if I remember right. I am sure the same size head bolts are used for both 12.7 and 11.1. Anyhow, I would think you would be ok at a little higher hp. Check with Pittsburgh Power. They are a Cummins dealer and have a lot of experience with turning up engines. They are a little pricey. But I trust their work.

Had a stock 1999 m11 set at 400 hp 1550 ftlbs it pulled fine but jakes were very weak .. block fretting is a issue apparently if you turn up over 450 hp

I don’t have jakes so not an issue. Do you remember if it would pull past 1600rpm
I would really like to be able to go down a gear and still hold my speed instead of lugging one gear higher.

We ran it at 1800 rpm in the mountains when pulling grades otherwise it was 1450 to 1500 I believe.
