Fist volvo, its a 2013 VHD D13, it has 216K miles, and had it driven its first trip 2550 in the last week.
Averaged 7.7 miles empty. I did not use a single drop of DEF Fluid, no check engine lights on, but I've never heard of a motor not using a single drop of DEF fluid.
I called a mechanic, he said, if the engine is not running dirty, this is normal? Are these engine really that clean, that it will not use any fluid? What says you experienced guys?

there is no "engine running clean", if it is burning diesel fuel or any hydrocarbon based fuel it is producing some level of emissions. DEF system's ONLY purpose is to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) and there is no way your engine is not producing those. The only way I can see that you used zero DEF is if someone did some kind of delete on the truck.

Did you try putting some in tank to see if gauge is broken .. d13 is a common engine for the def delete
KB3MMX and Newto Trucking Thank this. -
On average $25-30 a week in def, for an average 2500-3500 miles. Depending on how heavy the loads are. Try filling the def tank full and then 1000 miles later top it off. To see how much you used. Most Volvo’s have 70L def tanks. They all use def unless delete was done.

Sounds like your DPF system might have been deleted. I would check the DPF area to see if any changes have been made to the wiring harnesses etc. Look for a black box and any removed or cut wiring harnesses. If you drove that distance and no codes came up well it might be ok, but might not. Where did you buy it from (if you did buy it) because normally dealers won't touch a deleted truck and if you bought it privately I would hope you either knew the history or had it inspected. If it has been deleted you should have been told.
Anyways hope it works out for you.KB3MMX Thanks this. -
The mobile mechanic, still says, its cleaning burning engine. I'll have to dig deeper into it tomorrow. -
Well a somewhat normal DEF usage is usually anywhere from 200-350 miles per gallon. Did you buy it from a Volvo dealer, or just a place that sells trucks? No manufacturer's dealership would knowingly sell a truck with a delete. I'd like to know if that is the reason, or something else. There is no other way I can imagine not using and DEF and not having errors and the engine going into a derate mode. Keep us updated if you figure it out.
