No my broker rate today is 2.47/mi and I always start more than that. I have my own direct customers and get $3-4.20/mi and its hard getting them to pay that.

I'm not saying it can't be done once in a while but not every week or every load. I pull flats because it pays better if I could get the same rate in a van I'd start swinging doors but ever van load I see pays $1.40-$1.80 and no more on loads over 300 miles seems with vans the longer the run less the rate is.

Off subject, but, do brokers tend to concentrate business in a certain area. Let's say you pull loads for a broker out of Huntsville, Al. He/she gets you a load to Denver,Co. Would the broker have contacts to get you back to the Huntsville area? Or is that when you start to check the loadboards or try to call local businesses for a load?

Well, right off the bat I can tell you this.....

"can be a little flexible on this rate tell me what you need and I will run it by the boss"

That, that is a negotiation tactic known as the appeal to higher authority.

Used here in an open invitation, it begs the question; "why am I dealing with you, mr. junior broker agent, if you have no authority in regards to the rate?"

That's the counter to his tactic, you question his ability to reach a deal on his own.

"Why don't you have your boss call me, and he and I can discuss the rate, seeing as how you are unable to."

That should unnerve him a bit, get him out of his routine.....

And there's this, "These loads are 2 coils per load and weigh no more than 48K and load 24 hrs"

Oh, I see. A featherlight load that's convenient to pick up...lol....

And you hit him with your big number.

    He almost drops the phone.

    Are we still talking?

And then you give him the number you need to have, delivered with a straightforward and unwavering confidence.

If you get it, great... if not, it's on to the next phone call....

    Wasn't that easy?

Smaller brokers usually don't have reload offers. On the other hand, many of those may also be carriers running their own trucks and can refer you to other brokers that do have those reloads. But they won't do that for someone they don't know very well.

After a while you figure out what commodities you can haul are where, who has those loads, and whether they're worth calling on. When you've established a good reputation, they will be calling you to find out where your truck is so they can put loads on it.

Very Interesting..When i go to Kansas City i have an agent that has a customer in Sadalia Mo...The rate back to Harrisburg is 3650.00 on 975 miles on a van...Of course this is gross on L/S Board...

The trick is getting to Kansas City without going broke..:biggrin_2559:
