How much experience is "experience"

Looking to break into the world of trucking beginning next year after the holidays. Spoke to the owner of a local trucking school here who seemed like a pretty straight up guy. Now as I understand it, most trucking companies tend to shy away from drivers with less than a year experience, thereby forcing noobs to deal with long OTR runs for below average pay until you hit that year mark. Well, this guy is saying that his students are often able to land better gigs (better being not going OTR for three weeks straight at a time just to get a weekend home time) after about 90 days or so. I have a family so those long runs will be hard the first year, so the quicker I can get away from that the better. I see some companies here that offer two weeks out / one week home and many that offer home every weekend; so if I can open those doors sooner then that would be great. This school costs 4 G's and that's not going to be easy to come up with, but if going that route rather than going with a contract company for starters can help me move into a more desirable position sooner than that year mark, then I will see what I can do to make that happen.

I just want to get some feedback from some experienced folks whether this guy is blowing more sunshine than truth here. Hell I may not even be able to get that money together at all - in which case I have narrowed my choices down to Millis Transport or Roehl to get started. Also; he mentioned that some companies may be willing to "buy out" folks after a few months on the road to get them away from those contract companies. Makes sense I guess if they are willing to do tuition reimbursement for paid schools. Is that also something that happens frequently in the trucking industry? I live in Charlotte, so at least there is a decent sized metro area here with opportunity for what difference that may make. Thanks for the time and feedback!

Don't be too quick to get those deals. Every day you are home means a day you are not making any money.
2 weeks out with 1 week off means you are basically taking home 1/4 of what you should be. Can you and your family survive on that low income?

It's the same for home weekends, except for some dedicated runs. And many of the dedicated do not pay as well as OTR in the first place. The 'weekend' home is usually a 34 hour reset and not the full weekend off.

For OTR drivers, the week you get home and the week after you go back have low paychecks. If you want more consistent checks you need to stay out longer.

What 'this guy' is saying is exactly what you want to hear.
Spend your money with us, and we will get you the dream job.
It seldom happens in real life.

Yeah I'm not chasing a grand a week right out of the gate like many new drivers. I can do what I have to for the first year if that's what it takes, I just would like to know how realistic it is to get hired around with less than a year experience. If I have to, I can do my long hauls the first year if what I'm being told is mostly BS - I am looking to see if it would be a better option for me to cough up the dough up front to be free of the training commitment if he's telling me straight. If it wont matter, I think I would rather go the other option.

Are you opposed to a dock to driver program at an ltl company?

    Truck Driver Student

You would attend school in mornings and work the dock in afternoons/evenings.

After getting your license you would work nights driving doubles from terminal to terminal. Home every day

You could eventually work your way into city work if that interested you.

Put in an app to XPO logistics here a couple weeks ago, have not heard back. If that door opens then I'm all in. Maybe they dont want to hire 41 year old restaurant workers - the hiring culture in this city has its quirks like that.

You don't have to go OTR; depends on what's available in your area. Some drivers never go OTR during their whole career.
Schneider has a dedicated Target account and I think it runs out of Charlotte or nearby. You might do some overnighters, but it won't be hard core long haul trucking as some of us like.
Schneider hires new cdl grads so don't let some note on their website about "X months experience required" keep you from applying. Contact Schneider and ask about that account.
Schneider will reimburse cdl school tuition up to $7000.00 in monthly payments of $200.00 a month.
Schneider Bulk division has tanker jobs and it's easy to make over $60K there and probably make that your first year. Ask Schneider about their tanker division.

If willing to do Flatbed, it is a great option for weekend hometime. I started with Maverick transportation and I highly recommend it. They should be able to get you home most weekends with where you live. Might even be some dedicated options. I know they used to run dedicated out of Concord so might even be home more often. They also train with a couple schools in Arkansas but there is a waiting list for that. Check out Neil Shane Otts on youtube for great Maverick CDL school and general info. Best wishes to you!
