Sounds like his operating expenses are high, probably a new o/o with high insurance and bought a new truck with large payments.

Have you tried to broker the load? Or find a back haul for him to cover additional costs?

If that is really out of the question and he is stuck on that rate and it is more than you can afford find someone else to do it for less or hire a new driver and by a truck.

What are your company drivers costs per mile?

Would be interesting to know your approximate location as it would assist others to provide more accurate feedback.

Sounds like a bunch of desperate truck drivers in this thread with their long knives drawn and ready. First off she never said what the lanes are so who knows if the driver is cheap or high. Second you guys are comparing direct contract rates to spot rates. Some of you guys would actually consider contracting to go out and back empty for $1.65? With no opportunity to reload back? Lost opportunity there costing you money.

If I were a shipper, I would not hire the current trucker at his rate. That is a little high for the requirements. I have a similar deal with a shipper, so I understand the relationship.Getting a trucker who is reliable and good with customers has it's value.Given that he ( or she ) is top-notch, however, I would suggest that my top price would be 4 bucks a loaded mile if I were paying the freight bill, with a quarter bump when fuel escalates back over 3 dollars. He can do very well on that deal. That would be 2 dollars a mile for every mile run.

Out and mt back is $2 all miles anything less is a waste....

And that's with cheap fuel prices .

The op can make money on the material , the hired truck can't . If the op thinks it's such a good deal why not buy another tractor ....:)
