Ok I took a call this morning from someone who has been reading on this site about rates. I won’t get into who it is or why they are reading threads about rates other than this issue. She knows I am posting about this.
The lady has a 53 foot trailer lightly loaded with car parts (approximately 9000lbs) and other items that need to be moved from a warehouse in Detroit to someone who bought out the entire warehouse’s stock of parts. She runs a small charity that was given the contents of the warehouse and has sold off most of the items, including the machinery and parts.
The trailer is in Detroit a little over one mile from an entrance to I-94 and it has to go on the west side of Ann Arbor off of m14, a total distance of 59 miles.
After giving her a quote of $324 flat for the move, and she lost her mind.
“That is $5.50 a mile” she screamed (well sort of) how people are doing this for $2 a mile, which she expected to do.
i had to explain to her what it will take for a driver to take it, the inspection of the trailer, making sure the product is secured, the hook up (the trailer is in a very bad angle and will take an experienced driver to get the truck hooked up) and so on.
I also said because she is a charity, she is getting a huge discount for the move. I would change $800 for a move like this but she is a charity. I further explained to her that this will tie up a truck half a day, so I will pay the driver a full days wages as if he/she was making a 300 mile run and make zero on it.
so here is my question, what would you guys charge for this?
How Much would you charge for this load??

I would pay $324 just to come to your location and see the fleet of 100 trucks and finally stop believing those guys, that claim you are just an o/o leased to Landstar.

For all the hassle in Det Metro.
I would charge close to 1k. -
You ain’t in the wrong that’s a fair (actually generous) asking price considering it’s going to eat half or most of the day the driver will be lucky if you manage to find a same day pick up after that short run and he’s sure as heck not going to want to get paid the cross country rate for a short haul like that. The customer thought they were speaking with a cheap fly by night company from Chicagoland.
Chinatown Thanks this. -

I mean........she ought to understand how business works.....your driver gotta get compensated and hell you gotta get something out of this too. I mean maybe since it's for charity she can find a charitable company to do the job lol. Not only that, Two Men And A Truck may have charged a similar rate, if not more. 324 is a nice price.

4 hour minimum at $125 an hour, she might be running a charity, but I’m not, a d probably still light since those “go do this quick load to get it moved” are always the ones that turn into nightmares
Magoo1968, Dino soar, Opendeckin and 5 others Thank this.
