I worked with a guy when I ran rolloff that did things backwards. He never been in anything but a dump truck but he was one heck of an equipment operator. Anyways I rode with him one day this is how he downshifted.... He would pop it out of gear and hold the rpm's around 1600 while he braked with his left foot. In other words instead of matching engine speed with road speed, he matched road speed with his steady engine speed. With light tension it falls right in every time without grinding. It sounds pretty cool too but I know better than to be a left foot braker. Try it sometime when you are in the middle of no where.

Rolling down the road out of gear is considered out of control where I come from.

Where's your shifter when you are bumping up on a downshift? No different.

I didn't say that's how one should drive, just try it.

normally i only grid if i hop in a different truck ill fumble around the gears a bit for the first 10 miles or so. otherwise its pretty rare that i ever grind a gear.

i find myself reaching for a non existent gear shift in my personal vehicles when slowing down a lot, also trying turn on the Jake breaks. or try to split gears on my floor shift automatic car

i really have problems with standard transmission cars, try to back up and put it in 1st

First day or 50 years we all have the chance to learn something every day, when you stop learning you fail yourself.

You'll know you've been driving rig too long when you find yourself slowing down for the coop in your car!

I've done them all . . . looking for extra gears, looking for the jakes, slow down for the scale, and the other things that are part of the subconscious routine!
