Zipper rips are probably the #1 reason for tire failure next to road hazards. They're dangerous too.Watched an idiot in Pa.one time, had his arm wrapped around the top of the tire while he was airing it up.When the sidewall let go,almost took his arm with it.I had to layover, he was also the forklift operator.

I agree. Proper pressure in the virgin makes for a better recap.

I meant with a cap you need to be more vigilant about the air pressure.

This article explains it better than I can.

Put me down as a recap guy. I send my casings out for x-ray and if they pass I put a Bandag closed shoulder lug re-tread on them. I will not buy someone else’s caps and won’t cap my own unless they pass X-ray. I won’t cap trailer tires either.....too many curbs get clipped with a 53 ft spread axle.

Without checking for sure I think I’ve got 120,000 miles on 16 drive tires and there’s still lots of tread there. I drive these two trucks myself and keep the air pressure checked. Never had a seconds trouble

Never. recaps cost you more money in damage when they blow than you save buying them

I may have worded it wrong.Ive had retreads on company trucks in the past and 90% of the time when one " gave way" it was a retread.I also seen the "gators" in the highway.JMO

Hauling crude for a big fleet of ~500 (the blue trucks), they made their tire people use only they're own tires for retreads. Only trailers got them. Tractors got virgin tires all the way around.

    I was just thinking....
I get it that if done properly at reputable tire shop, then taken care of by means of checking pressure every day, recaps can be a great money saver or some of you say so. For one truck owner tough, you should consider time for them to be processed and also what would the truck be sitting on while the tires are in the tire shop being recapped? I don't keep a set of 4 old beat up tires in my tidy but small garage and I don't have a pick up truck either.
Even if I wanted to do recaps, the only option for me is to buy new.

I have a tire store near me. (45 miles away). They pickup and deliver no extra charge. If I go to them they install on truck.
They do the retreading in house.

If you are a return customer. Maybe your local tire shop would store them.

Some businesses will do that little extra service to have your sales.

I've got Bridgestone caps with Bridgestone pattern cap on it. Currently have 210k miles on them and they're 5-8/32nds.
