I attend a CDL school orientation recently. None of the attendees seemed to have the slightest clue about higher paying fields or just how predatory the mega carriers such as Werner and Swift are. None had any semblance of a game plan to make it to the 80k / 90k jobs either. And of course the CDL school was beholden to its local sponsor, whom I researched online and found to be laughable bad driver reviews (that's why they are willing to "fund" (loan) 8 drivers per class - due their high driver turnover. Trucking is like a minefield, you have to study the ground very carefully before proceeding. A #### company like Werner or Swist can easily keep you in bondage with #### pay, abuse, a $6000 CDL school loan to repay, and weeks out at a time away from your family where you can regroup and have access to computer to apply elsewhere. Gotta plan your career carefully
How realistic is it to make 75-80k a year eventually?

One thing to keep in mind. Trucking companies qualify under one of Warren Buffet’s Rules of investing. That is...
He always invests in companies that even an idiot can run. Because sooner or later. An idiot is gonna try to run it.Jtuminelli and EphTrucker Thank this. -
A question, did you know all that you know now when you first set foot in that orientation classroom? I bet you did not. This is my primary point. Most of the knowledge (good or bad) is OJT. This is a bad way to learn the ropes. In the case of this Swifty hopefully I will know more tomorrow.

I'm surprised that when people talk about making these kind of numbers trucking nobody ever mentions car hauling.
Bob Dobalina and Chinatown Thank this. -
You are one of the biggest proponents of truck driving as a career for others yet you no longer drive. Correct? Why is that? (Not an in your face question. Honestly just curious.)Bean Jr. Thanks this.

Good reason. Me too.

Just to put things in perspective, my first job out of truck driving school I was lucky to take home 350 bucks a week.
Personally if it was me I think I'd stick with what you're doing right now. I make pretty good money doing what I'm doing but if I can do it without driving a truck I'd be on it in a heartbeat.Bean Jr. and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Rotflmao.... What’s wrong with you, China? Don’t you know you’re expected to die in the drivers seat of a truck?!
-
I know your question was not directed to me, however while it may not sound like it I am a huge proponent of trucking as a career. @Chinatown has been in these forums for a few years with good advice in regard to helping match drivers with good companies. I had to get out of the business for health reasons. I still miss a lot of my friends.Bean Jr. Thanks this.

Hey. By the looks of his photo I'm guessing he's about my age, so he's got some more miles in him.
