How the heck do guys who cant back up get their cdl?

What I dont get is Ive seen this several times at truck stops or distribution centers. Guys driving trucks who cant back up. I just don't get it, how did they pass their cdl test?

Last week we waited as a guy took 45 mins to back into a street side dock in NJ. Granted it was tight with traffic but still 45 mins we watched him. I actuality walked up to dunkin donughts and came back and he still wasnt done. Worst part, was when he left he slammed into the dock plate and bent it, causing us to wait even longer as the warehouse guys yelled at him and got his insurance info for the damage..

Yesterday, I watched a guy try to back into a spot at a truck stop. It was a end with 3 open spots in a row. He tried 3 times before giving up and pulling in cab 1st..

Today at a drop there are 3 (gold) trucks from the same mega carrier... I was told that this company was good fore new hires btw... glad I didnt go there..

Anyway 2 of the 3 could not get in their holes. The 1st guy tried for 15 minutes before unhooking and letting the yard jocky do it. 2nd guy took at least 10 mins to get his in, he even turned to truck around trying to do it blindside for some unknown reason, before realizing that was harder and went back the other way. 3rd guy got in ok.. Now all these guys were solo in their trucks so they had cdls and weren't being trained...

It wasnt just these guys either some other truck pulled in and was having problems as well.. This wasn't even a tight dock.

After backing into the hole 2 over from the 1st guy, only having to readjust once I told my trainer Im gonna switch companies because that gold truck company would probably give me my own truck tomorrow...

Seriously though, how do so many people get cdl's who cant even back up? I'm only out here 3 weeks and I already see these things as a common thing, so I know the more experienced guys must wonder the same.

its probaly because they arent as amazing as you are. if they didnt anything why do it matter.

Give me a completely empty warehouse no other trailers for miles and I'll miss the door by 50 feet eveytime. Now the last empty blindside spot at the pilot with not even enough room between trucks to open your door and I'll drop it right on.

Also, try being up for 3 days driving and then see how well you back up.

Everyone is always in a hurry.some of these docks are super tight for a sleeper truck I make them wait.
I'll get out and offer assistance if I see a driver having trouble.
I've had drivers offer me assistance also..some drivers take offense if you offer help.I couldn't care less if they get an attitude.
We're all out here doing the same job ,no good things come from damaged properly.

This is very cool of you man.I am always thankful for help even when I don't really need it. I drive for almost 3 years and usually do OK backing up that thing but sometimes I still mess up.Some 2 months ago at a small tight Pilot (the only spot left) I have gotten myself in a situation where I couldn't move back or forward despite being helped and the driver helping me was so kind that he actually woke up driver in the spot next to open spot to ask him to back up a little farther. Of course as soon as I made it into the spot I jumped out (probably red on my face from embarrassment)of the cab thanked the driver helping me (hope he is doing great!) and apologized to the driver who had to be woken up.

Here is a funny story. I've had my license since I was 17, 35 years. I had to take the skills years when I transferred my license to Illinois. So I took a company 53' trailer and my 236" wheelbase truck to take it. I failed on the 45° backing because the overhang crossed the line. The tester asked how I could back up if I couldn't pass the test. I told her in the real world nobody cares if you cross the line, as long as you don't hit trailers, which of course are easier to see than lines on the ground. Then I asked her how is it that there are drivers you have passed who can't back up? She had no answer.

Yup,it is basically useless in real life situations. I passed the test in IL too.Perfectly did that 45 backing because before test I was told that I need to stop when the lamp post is lined up with the center of passenger side window.
