How the heck do guys who cant back up get their cdl?

This post sounds like it's taking a jab at people who are learning. And about this post being not about drivers who are learning this is an open forum and open to interpretation so it kinda is about people learning trucking driving schools don't teach you everything you have to get out there and learn it yourself

That happened to me. Nose in didn't go wide enough next to me. Crazy way to wake up in the sleeper rocking my truck and demolishing the right front and losing headlights.

 

Some are just naturals at it, others it takes some time and others just aren't that good at it after 20 years but if you don't hit anything thats what matters

 

And?

 

The problem is these are basic skills that should be acquired BEFORE getting a CDL.

A CDL should be required before hauling any paying freight.

There are huge problems with the way this industry trains and evaluates new drivers. When I learned to back I learned how to back into a huge spot with a minimum of pullups. In the real world I've never been limited on the number of pullups, rather space and (to a certain extent) time are the limiting factor. Why aren't we testing guys on how well they can back into a spot thats 120 inches wide with 55 feet in front of the hole? Oh, and they need to do it with a 53 foot trailers and a sleeper truck. Same with the road test - heck I'd prefer them to use a 53' spread axle.

Schools are responsible for teaching a guy how to drive. Company's are responsible for teaching company policies and how to haul freight. Mixing education and profit margins is like spitting fire - when done right it's awesome but very few can do it right. Most just end up burning their eyebrows off or setting the house on fire.

 

I was taking a jab at a company that is sending drivers out on the road with out adequate training. I mean look, Im brand new myself and trust me I fully understand the hardships of a new driver trying to back into hard spots. However these wernt even hard spots and even as a new driver I could see they didnt understand the basic backing manuvers or how to fix their mistakes.

I know this comes with time and practice but some of the basic stuff should be taught while getting your cdl or during your training.

If it would have been just one guy I might of just passed it off as a slower learner, but when they had 3 trucks there and 1 couldnt even get the trailer in and the other toook 15 mins the last just wasnt horrible.. Well at that point you start to understand its a training issues.

It was later confirmed after we were hit at the truck stop and I found out they have 4 month cdl holders training new drivers. That's just absurd.

The company its self holds a lot of blame in this because its their policies but the drivers also have so e blame due to going to work for a company that trains them like this..

 

There are too many that don't even try to learn. They just start circling the lot looking for a pull through spot when there are plenty of back in spots available.

Wrong people for the job.

 

See that's the good thing at least with my trainer, there will be plenty of pull through spots and he still makes me back into one...

Its good though because Im getting decent at backing, but sometimes you just want to park the truck and get the heck out, lol.
