True you got a good point there,I never did local been stuck doing OTR but i'm pretty happy with OTR but i'm considering local but only thing I see is local mostly hourly pay and you can make more locally but at lease your home on a daily basics.

OTR for the most part counts experience as OTR jobs within the last 3 years.

It has alot to do with insurance regulations, is the driver up to date on new DOT regulations, etc.

OTR driving is also considered driving 5 or more states. That's why on the applications, they ask what states you drove in. Always list about 7 of them if not more. :)

An old OTR driver might be able to drive, he just isn't current on everything and needs refreshing.

A local driver has no clue to all the rigamaroo of living on the road. A 10 year local driver is useless if he cries for his mommy after a week out. :)

Anybody can jump on the interstate in Ca. and jump off in Tx. a day later, but doing 10-20 stops with-in a decent size city doesn't count as "experience" with most all large truck companies. Huh ? Yeah, I agree......explain that please Mr. safety guy/insurance guy.

    Couldn't agree more!

trip planing, Is 4th grade geography.
Scaling a load, done that 100s of times driving local.

The one thing that might be rough is mountain driving If you never did it.

For $24 per hour, I had NO PROBLEM sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Out of 12 hrs usually drove 4-5. The rest, either waiting for the door or
    waiting to be unloaded.

45-50 hour work week, M-F, weekends off, holidays off and paid!

Full benefits, BCBS PPO $25 per week for entire family.

Taking home easy 1200 after taxes.

Again, having time for my family after work, hobbies, friends, etc, priceless buddy.

Right on. And some of those stops in big city, I mean god did not intend 53 foot trailer to go in there. But we still get it in there safely. On a first try.

And repeat that process 10-15 times throught the day.

Not to even mention making del's at the local mall. Try navigating that parking lot around Christmas ..Puhleeze man

Man they get me all worked up on this ####!

You think local ltl is hard....try OTR LTL, at w/s our runs had 10-25 stops that could all be in 1 city or span 2000 miles and at the end of the day you still have to find a place to park

I hear ya man, no job is easy, local or OTR.

My gripe is with companies and how they classify experience.

I've done that with a set of triples. I can tell you from what I've done pulling an 85' super tanker loaded with gasoline around town is much harder than any other job I've had. That includes oversize loads state to state. It's a shame when a driver has 30 years safe driving without an accident or incident and you tell him or her they're inexperience. But the pay is much much more and worth it. Never OTR again.
