If you can get 6 months to a year of safe OTR you will have no trouble getting a local gig... But like others have said check your options but you don't have to go OTR out the gate.

Omg the kid won't even know you're gone until 3, we had no issues with the kids, the wife on the other hand had issues balancing things with sick parents and the kids,

    but she got through it.

When my kids were that age, I was on the road doing the consulting thing, much harder than the truck thing and we had no choice.

I came to the conclusion the kids don't remember much until they get to be 8 or 9.

Don't kid yourself on that. My kids are in thier 30s and I'm constantly amazed at the things they remember from an early age.

Yeah mine are in there late teens/early 20's now but when I asked them about my absence impacting them, they said "dad who?". As long as I provided and was there when they needed help, mom and the oldest did well.

    Indeed.

I have memories that go back well beyond age 8.

Not only that, it is also what you don't remember because you didn't experience it. I.e.-first time walking, first birthday, etc.

I agree. I can still remember a ton of memories from before 8 and I am 51 now.
