Okay, I think I now know what’s going on. The problem is probably not the stability control. I think my brakes are locking up due to cold weather. More specifically, the brakes are freezing overnight. What’s strange is that it’s only happening to one pair of tires on my trailer. The other three sets on my trailer are not showing any signs.

Just today, I realized one set of my “drive” tires is also showing signs of one instance of brake freeze. The tires are still good, though. Maybe 1/32 of an inch was removed from the tires, but it’s nothing compared to my trailer tires.

My plan to prevent this is to not set my trailer brakes overnight when the temperatures are below 25. I’ve known about this technique in the past. Well, this technique isn’t just to prevent a complete brake freeze, but now also to prevent a set of tires from locking up. When this happens, you won’t realize it because you start driving with one set of tires locked. It just feels normal.

The other technique I’m thinking about is to mark all the tires with a white line on the outside. So at the start of my day, I will move my truck a few feet forward, and then walk around the truck to ensure all the white lines on the tires have moved. This of course only needs to be done if the truck was shut down in an area with temperatures below 25 and also only at the start of the day. If you mark the tires with some sort of white “chalk” (?), the mark will still be there for weeks. To quickly record the position of the mark on each tire, you can think of the tire as if it were a clock. So you can write down 3pm, 7pm, and so on.
