The automotive governor setting I was told by the Cummings rep was to ensure the drivability by those who are not truck drivers, mainly rv and "steering wheel dummies".

That just seems strange that Cummins even offers the continuous governor setting in the parameters in the first place. Even a seasoned man has no real desire to run it on that setting, due to the over-responsive nature of the delivery system ...just too radical in my opinion.

I'll admit I have had little exposure to the new latest version of the ISX's, so the very thought of pulling at 1200 rpm's just isn't a natural act for me to comprehend. What I have seen firsthand, consequently is two of them (both 2014's) with the heads off, liners on the floor and a counter boring tool down inside the block cleaning up the sarface areas that were damaged by (in theory, ) lower rpm torque manipulation that caused movement of the liners resulting in premature failure.

But these engines can't be remotely compared to the old 855 ci NTC's, etc. as they're a whole other completely different animal. Not as pleasant to work on either, I might add.

On the four trucks with isx engines I drive for customers, there are two that are set automotive and two that were changed to continuous. The former trucks are driven with the r's up between 1400 and 1550 while the latter trucks you can pull under a light load from idle to 1600 without problems and a heavy load from the peak torque - 1200 to 1600.

I know many of you think you will screw up the engine by pulling at idle under a light load but you won't. The fuel system adjusts to this and the days of high r's seem to be in the past.[/QUOTE]

The two settings are Automotive and VSG, or Variable Speed Governor, which is most similar to a CAT mechanical, which I have found most all drivers apprieciate. This is available for M11/N14 and ISX. Take care.

I love the isx motors. I've put some miles on a couple of '07 565 horse isx's, 3.36 rears, 18spds with low pro 24.5's, and through trial and error I had to figure out what they liked..i'd always been a cat guy prior to. Keep it above 1400rpm, and it pulls like a banshee. I drove both trucks stock, and then pdi tuned, with the pdi turbo, manifold, etc, and it's a blast to roll through Texas Canyon on I-10 at 83k lbs, in 18th gear doing 75 on the cruise, and not get slowed down at all.

Old school techniques make an ISX perform...higher rpm's...ask anybody with some years on them.

How in the heck do you even pull a hill at 40 percent load or less?!? Is 40 percent load for 7 minutes better than 99 percent for 3 minutes as far as fuel consumption? I run a slightly tuned up cat and I would have to drop like 6 gears to pull a hill under 40% vs. I could just keep it in high gear and roll right over the top.
Some people seem to think it you see 100% load your engine will self destruct. Not saying you are that guy but dang. I'll applaud your patience as long as you aren't in front of me. And before giving me a hard time about wasting fuel I run local and dump my loads running 1450 rpm, fuel mileage is an afterthought
