I was kinda thinking that too. I still start out in 1st most of the time just out of habit. I let the clutch out and as soon as it starts rolling I start rowing gears.

Anytime I'm loaded I always start off in low, the lowest gear I have.

Keep practicing and, sooner or later, your left thigh will be bigger than your right. You'll sway when you walk like a drunken sailor and folks'll be looking for the parrot...lol.

With an 18, I'll split low gears if heavy. There have been a few times I had to split granny. I don't do it to be cool, but because taking 80k uphill from a standing start is difficult, sometimes.

When im feeling lazy and deadheading on flat or downhill, i will skip shift. Take off in cheater hole [low gear high side] then split up to OD, and eaaasse up to 2000rpm, then neutral for a long while until she slides down to 1000 and drops into 6th under, split to 6over, then one more shift to 8under.

The truck basically becomes a 3 speed and saves me a lot of work in light to light suburban stop and go 55mph commuting.

Bean Jr., FlaSwampRat and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

I will do something like that in the woods or out on the road, never in town or in traffic. In traffic I want it in gear at all times, even slowing for a light. I have had idiots in 4 wheelers jump in front of me too many times when the last thing I saw before they went out of sight under the hood was brake lights, and I want my truck in gear and the jake operational. lol
