Think about it a different way. If you were the boss what would you fire a driver for?
There are only a few of things our company automatically fires for...theft, a positive drug test, failure to test, too many tickets, and obvious negligence that results in an accident.
Everything else is on a case by case basis.
Drivers screw up...that's a given. But if we fired a guy for every little thing he did wrong we'd have to replace him with another driver...and another and another and another. See the pattern?
Drivers versatile enough to do the kind of hauling we do are rare. We'd rather educate a driver and show him how to do something right so he doesn't make the same mistake again. If he does, then it's time to send him home.
A driver's attitude toward what he did wrong also goes a long way in whether we keep him or not. Dodging well placed blame and trying to excuse himself from responsibility will get him fired quick.

Thump a 2 foot 8 inch fire bottle onto the desk of safety, it has fire burns on it. Empty.

    Ask for another.

    Safety says what the hell?

Not that, impossible. You have another?

    What...

Sir. You said orientation, no questions replace bottle do you have another.

God you are... stomps off to replace bottle.

IF he did ask questions that day, I would have had to tell him, and that would have been bad. Let's say the fire is out and no one got killed or hurt. Just a little salvage car for the tow truck.

You better make sure the boss can hear it and see if both partiers enjoy it. :biggrin_2559::biggrin_2559::3some:

Eh, he probably hates the spoiled entitled little brats. And their mother too.

Now, kick his dog, you might have a problem.

Get some inspections with violations. Especially things a pre-trip should have caught.
As far as the cell phone some companies will fire you for talking even if you do have a headset. Some will can you for moving the truck without seat belt on, even just a few feet.

I've passed by a road side inspection station seeing a driver having to unload cargo from the trailer. Not sure if it was due to over weight issues or something else. Only seen this twice in my life time.
