My process, starting at 19 years old, was being a yard dog for a mom and pop local company. Eventually, they put me on a 50 mile round trip doing 6 shuttle runs a night. Took about 8 hours, but was a little bit of road experience. Then I got moved to a southern KY to Florence, KY round trip since I couldn't leave the state. When I turned 21, I lucked out and found a company that accepted local experience. That was during the height of COVID and the market boom, so I honestly don't think it would've worked out in today's market where drivers aren't in as high of demand. It was still a bit of a learning curve. The driving and backing is only part of it if you want to be a good driver. Watching over equipment, maximizing HOS, trip planning, etc. all come with experience and can be learned a lot quicker with a good trainer, I'd imagine.
