If you are an owner-op or lease-operator it can be done from a load board. You scroll through the loads, submit a bid through the app, and the broker contacts you. Some freight brokers don't work with brand new authority motor carriers. Freight rates are pretty low right now and there are lots of dishonest freight brokers and made up loads on some of the load boards. I think DAT, Truckstop.com, are a couple of the bigger load boards.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this.

Not to be an ****** hole but before you start trying to get your own work, learn your finances first.
I mean, don't be stupid and set yourself up for failure, know how much it costs to run the truck, how much you need for your living expenses (keep it separate), how much you expect to pay in taxes, and set your minimum rates for your work from all of that.
If you can't do that, then do not own a truck, be a company driver.FearTheCorn, Flat Earth Trucker, Albertaflatbed and 1 other person Thank this. -
NEWS FLASH ! ! Anyone can become a broker, even a truck driver. Works good if you have a partner ( wifey) doing the computer and telephone work at home. She finds the loads, books them with truck O/O's AND even hubby and you make $$$ from the load revenue and brokers fees. Do you think J.B. Hunt and C.R. England and Swift use brokers ? Have you ever seen a load board where J.B. Hunt is brokering the load ? And we all know anyone, and I mean anyone can become a broker.
-
JB Hunt has their own load board. And yes they will haul brokered freight. So I’m a little confused by your post.
-
The big megas all have load boards where they tender freight to O/Os and outside carriers.Iamoverit Thanks this.

You're confused alright
-
You look at the board, see the load you like, get an idea how much you need to move it for, call, broker gives you details about the load, you negotiate on the price and either you book it, or don't.
If you don't, then process repeats. Sometimes you make one call per day, sometimes 50.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
How so? Why don’t you explain it to me
-
Exactly, My point is the big carriers don't need to use brokers, they have all their own freight and actually broker out their overflow that they can't handle with their equipment.
