My wife just hit a deer, insurance estimated $5,000 damage. The dealership was approved to repair, and ultimatly the total bill was $9,587. The insurance co. is obligated to pay that overage, and I'm sure they wished they would've totaled it. <---My point is, be careful accepting the $5,000 check, as money in your pocket. The true cost may be much higher.

Also you may feel threatend with higher premiums... Don't! If you've kept it upright, in your lane, no other vehichles involved, no tow, and no police report; your golden!!! Yes your insurance may increase, but there are other insurance companies that will be happy to accept you. Shop around.

JMO if the moose/bumper would save the truck, the insurance co. premiums would reflect that. Which would behove every truck owner to get one.

This is sooo wrong... You want to hit the deer in the head and save the meat.. :biggrin_25522:

Also, tell that to the elk I killed 3 months ago. He was going right so I went left and he turned around. Took out the right headlight, cracked the hood and 2 tires on the trailer. Luckily it was a triple axle. Drop the air, wrap a chain around the bad axle and limp to the tire shop. I was 2 hours away from the nearest shop in the middle of nowhere MT. It was also 4:30 am. Shouldn't they be sleeping at that time of night... Dang Teenagers!

Didn't even scratch the bumper but we have pretty tough bumpers, not those plastic or sheet metal ones. Heck our tow pin is bolted directly to the bumper.

    In response to another post...

Oh I did hit the brakes but not enough time to stop but I did get it down to 40 mph. As for making the damage worse if you slow down.... BS! Maybe with a deer or antelope but not with anything bigger. That might work with a black tail or a white tail but try that with a mule deer or larger. If you will hit one at 60, I will hit one at 40 and we will see who has the most damage.

I had one one time that was trying to decide if they wanted to go over the guard rail or back in front of me..... I hit the horn and it dove under the guard rail. Didn't expect that to happen... Kinda funny to see though.

I think the trick with deer is seeing them ahead of time, and not making any irregular sounds to spook them. No Jake, squeelin brakes, or air horn! With over 2 million miles mostly in the Northwest I have never hit a deer with the front of the truck, but have had many deer run into the side of the truck. And yes, if one runs across the road be prepared for more.

A LTL company I've worked for had this policy in effect for years until a driver sent the ears off a deer he hit to the safety department ;) Now they say, "we can tell if it was a deer strike" ;)
I literally knocked the crap out of the deer I hit last week. He left excrement and fur on the side of my bumper. My boss wanted me to clean it up before my day driver took the truck back to Penske the following Monday. I told him no way, I want there to be proof that it was a deer I hit so Penske couldn't claim it was anything else ;)

I wouldn't touch it. It's a badge of honor and penske will still charge your company for damages anyway.
My LTL employer ( day dispatcher / TM ) would ask for deer steaks later in the week just to rub it in that they know I'm not a Outdoorsmen lol,

No solid advice on hitting deers properly, Crap happens and don't swerve, Many close calls thank goodness. Live in #1 state with deer strikes

Hmmm Montana is only 2nd on the list.... Guess they don't count elk, moose, antelope or bears. for the record, I have gotten both a deer and an elk so far this year and still have 2 months to go. Almost got a speed goat this spring and I saw 2 swamp donkeys last week.

just plow through it. no sense swerving or hitting the brakes and jack knifing to avoid a deer.

not worth a preventable or a hard braking counseling.

hitting a deer or animal in the road is not preventable. and isnt chargeable to you or your dac or driving record (unless you are in a zone that is posted 55mph from sundown to sun up because of increased nocturnal wildlife activity and were going too fast).
