How to log

Just tell them Im a local driver, and Im exempt from logging. They already know.

 

Ask the safety manager at your company.If he doen't know then log your day anyway. If in doubt, log it. Do not take chances with your CDL! It's not worth being lazy. It is easier to ask a DOT officer about it when you put a completed log book in his/her hands. Good luck in your new job.

You need to read that section 395 a little slower. I cant find the regulation you pasted that from (do you have the rule number for it?) but Trust me, owner operators have logbooks too. That's not a total exemption from all logging rules. Nobody is ever exempt. Some of the vehicles you will drive won't require a logbook, but if you drive a vehicle that requires one, you'll still have to have logs for the last 8 days if you did any work at all. Including flippin burgers at mcdonalds. However that can be logged as line 4 and theres a special form that you can fill out for it instead of actually drawing the lines, kind of like the 100 mile radius exemption log.

I'd just log everything, honestly.

 

Ok I think I got it from page 3 when someone was asking about pre and post trip... and Logrus replied here...

 

I logged 4 hours to unload once. But it actually took me 5 hours.

 

What you should try to do is if it's only 7 minutes past the quarter, then log back to the previous quarter. Then when you go back on the drive line, wait till 8 minutes past the quarter, and log in on drive line at the next quarter hour. You just saved yourself 1/2 hour of drive line. Do that a couple times of day when your running behind and you'll be able to get 60+ miles further down the road. Watch your average speed though, you company drivers.
