I have been working at my current company for about 4 months. Everything is going well but there are a few things that throw me off, I won't go into details about them.

I plan on returning to a company I previously worked at for better pay and home more often. I've heard different things from different drivers. Some people are telling me I should just come back to the yard and quit without giving notice. Others are telling me to give a 2 week notice.

    Which is better?

Sometimes it's just easier to tell the truth instead of the Jedi mind games. Tell them you are going to leave and give them notice. If they decide to be dirtbags at least you did your part. It's all you can do unless you want to be the first dirtbag. Just like all other transactions in life it's usually better to be the one walking away with his head held high.

I'm more worried about you going back to an old company.

One thing I live by, if I quit a company I will never EVER go back. EVERRRRR. Because if things got THAT bad that I had to leave, they will never be good enough that I would ever want to return.

Situations change. I quit one place, because another driver, and a supervisor, were unbearable. I could handle one, or the other, not both at once.

Went back about 5 years later, when both had quit. Still had friends working there, who got me back in.

Depends on the size of the company and how much your leaving will put them in a bind. If it's a small company and they're short of drivers, talk to your boss and explain the situation. My guess is that they won't care if you give 2 weeks or not.

I quit 3 companies in my first 3 years of driving before becoming an O/O. The only one I left with no notice treated me the worse, and I previously gave them 10 days notice, and they talked me out of it guaranteeing that things would get better. It got worse, and I just called in one morning and quit. Left them hanging on a weeks worth of loads, and I was happy that I pissed them off. They were bad people.

Best advice, right here. I did that,, once, quit my 1st trucking job, had several others, then ran into the guy somewhere, asked me to come back.Reluctantly, I did, and didn't take long to realize why I quit in the 1st place. Regardless how much you don't like a company, I'd give some notice, a week was usually good enough for me, and never "burned a bridge', not because I'd go back, but quitting a job today , apparently, is worse than all. If you want to keep trucking today, best to do it by the book.

I would still call and give your notice. Whether or not the company wants to run you for those 2 weeks is up to them, but more than likely they will just route you back to the yard asap so they can quick service your truck and toss the next body into it.

I have heard all the horror stories about guys giving 2 week notice and then the company refuses to route them back to the yard. I’m sure that has happened, but if you work for that shady of a company than that’s partially your fault lol.

My current company is a small 60 truck fleet, they have a high turnover like many other companies. It's probably the best company I've worked for so far, tractors are all 2019+. The trailers are new but in very bad shape, most have what appears to be serious damage on the outside. None of the trailers I've pulled in this time had any registration. They also make drivers pay tolls out of pocket since we don't have EZ pass transponders. Any O/O will know this adds up to hundreds of dollars a week. We do get reimbursed but it's just not worth the headache.

I'll just give a notice and say that I'm quitting, hopefully they find a driver to take my place before I leave.

I've returned to old companies in the past with not much issues. The company I'm returning to I originally left because the owner and I couldn't agree on certain things. My dad has been working there 10+ years and we struck a deal with the owner.
