Basic training Nov 71. AIT #1 Ft Dix still spring Ft. Gordon for AIT #2 summer starting no AC not to bad. Sheppard AFB Tx for AIT #3 dead summer no A/C pretty hard for a Georgia boy raised with no A/C! Permanent Party on Okiowana No A/c not to bad if the ocean breezes were blowing! Then back to Ft Gordon for Permanent Party. Still pretty ok but sticky due to humidity and yes those wonderful OD Green tents during manuevers and training! NO A/C!
And the ONLY vehicles that had A/C were the ones officers were driven around in if they worked for a General! Or the Comm centers on the back of a duce or 5 ton or a 3/4 ton to keep the crypto stuff working! I always love duty week so I could either drive a Full Bird or higher around or the drunk bus as it also had A/C! But nothing else in the Armys inventory had A/C! Don't forget we still used jeeps!

No A/C in a truck didn't really matter when I started as I drove mostly in the mountains of GA, TN, AL, SC, NC so summer time was really nice as I drove only during the day and slept nights until the owner died and his wife sold the company and I went OTR. But I was still not all that used to conditioned air. BUT, then I bought my first truck with A/C I've been spoiled ever since and would NOT go back to sleeping in warm temperatures! And screw ANYONE who thinks I would sleep in an oven when they work and sleep in a nice cool or warm office and home! Whats good for the gander is good for the head goose!

When Wilson the Cattle trailer manufacturer comes out with the first air conditioned cattle trailer, we will know we drivers have become the cattle.

I won't sleep hot or cold for no company not for $2 $5 $10 / gal. for fuel every one of those companies can stick it. and any company that don't want to fork out the money for an APU don't have any right to tell a driver not to idle.but I won't idle if i'm not in the truck such as showers or going inside to eat or whatever if I'm not in the truck the truck isn't running.

My boss and I have an agreement, if I'm not happy, he's not happy. If I can't sleep because too hot/cold, then I'm going to be very crabby, and guess who bears the brunt of that crabbiness.

Many times I've gotten a hotel at company expense, if I'm going to have to sit more than 10 hrs and idle the truck hot/cold I get a hotel room. Usually go for Super 8 or similar, they may not be the Hilton or Four Seasons, but they have heat and A/C and I get sleep.

Solution to the California/Texas and some other state anti-idling rules. When the idiot hands you the citation, tear it up and tell him to take you to jail. You'll have heat or A/C and 3 squares whiles your waiting for the judge.

FT Irwin rotates troops in for desert training. If I remember right it is 2 weeks at a time. I spent 16 months in that hole.

Nope, we went for 4 weeks in the summer of 89 and 6 weeks in the summer of 90. The reason 6 weeks in 90 was because somebody lost a rifle. I think in your quest to belittle me, your getting it confused, I think maybe you guys rotated out in the field every two weeks, but the others going there to train stayed for 4 weeks. Not that any of this matters since it's gotten so far away from the OP.

Slang for an evaporation cooler. Great in dry climates. Usually lower temp about 20'. In humid areas they feel good if you sit right in front of one. Other wise they load your house up with even more moisture. Feels like a swamp. Causes mold and mildew as well.
