I used to think that it was a revenue thing in my little town, a 2 lane US Highway 1 mile from the Interstate. Speed limit is 45 miles an hour from the interstate to city limits, then 35 in town, all clearly marked, even with a flashing speed limit sign that says thank you when you get below 35. Within the 35 zone there are 2 convenience food stores, a Dollar General, Insurance agency, an IGA, an elementary school within 1 block, and the rest filled with houses on 1/4 acre lots. And an intersection with another US highway.

The 35 mph limit is a valid safety issue here. If it had happened in this town, he would have been immediately arrested, car impounded . It is that important, because we have had several serious accidents caused by this very behavior.

I too took some "liberties" early on (age 17 in NJ, racked up 11 points in 6 months, almost lost the license as soon as I got it). I learned. It paid off in my trucking career. Maybe 3 speeding tickets in 45 years, all during the 55 national speed limit craze before 1996, all doing less than 65 in a 55. I now drive 75 mph legally on highways that I was cited on back then. Now that was a bone fide revenue producer, no safety issue involved, as you old timers will remember....

If your town has signs with flashing lights then they are interested in safety.

If they have normal signs and a cop hiding running radar all day, they don’t care about safety , they care about ringing the cash register .

Yeah, and you can get away with murder if they don't have enough evidence to charge you in two months. It's called, "The Sixty Day" law or something like that.
