Little history about me and how I got into trucking , my uncle is an O/O and I've been riding with him for the last year and 1 month just learning the ropes and he's been teaching me how to drive since I have learners permit...so I'm finally ready to go test after one year doing flatbed OTR work with my uncle..my test is exactly one week from today ..I'm getting nervous but I think I got this down packed ...if y'all have any advice for me that would be ####ing awesome !!!!!

Go slow dont scare the tester. Call out any road signs or cars entering roadway so the tester knows you see them. Call out when you downshift, maybe 2-3 times to show you can do it. Practice the pre trip touching and calling out stuff as you go, dont forget your horns.

Ok, so it's good to be vocal during the drive portion of the test ?? Hopefully I don't get an ####### examiner, I read about some messed up examiners on this board ...I'm going through a third party tester from a truck driving school here in NC...thanks for the reply !!

Also make sure you dont shift while on rr tacks and dont give him a reason to think youre going to fast to make a turn. Think safe safe safe.

Is the school affiliated with johnson community college?

No shifting while crossing an intersection as well..probably make the turn in 3rd or 4th hear I'm thinking

Stuff like "bridge clearance 14' 2" or "car entering on right" definitely any signs that are truck specific. Things always seem worse when youre not in control of the truck so letting him know you see stuff is definetly going to help. Make sure you wait till theres no cars in sight before turning and stuff like that. Call out guages reading when stopped at a light or before you release the brakes. It might seem like overkill but for a guy that spends his day testing inexperienced drivers feeling like theres no chance of crashing will go a long way towards a passing score. Ohh my instructor literally talked the whole time. I had to interrupt him to call out signs. I guess they are all different.

Good point about the turns. I was taught 10 MPH 6th gear. Unless theres a reason to go slower of course. Anything under 5th gear and you wont have much range but no big deal just go slow. And check your mirrors every 3-5 seconds. "red car passing on right" will let him know youre watching.

What third party tester? In Illinois all examiners are from the state DOT. (afaIk)
Will you be doing the skills test and then road test on the same route practiced in school?
MikeeeeBiH Thanks this.
