howto set up my cb radio?

Lmao. I was at the loves on I 40 at exit 412. I decided to waltz into the cb shop. Not the one on the white list. I WAS gonna browse his selection, maybe pick his brain. Then, he said two things that let me know he was clueless. First, he was telling a guy that he should get 18 foot of coax for his radio 'cause 18 foot is 1/2 the wavelength of 11 meter', completely oblivious to the fact that RF travels slower through different coax types, therefore dramatically reducing said length. Not that it matters period on a properly tuned antenna. Also, he told me HIS KL203 linears could handle 8-10 watt deadkey input and almost 200watt AM PEP from the amp. I literally laughed and walked out.

 

Yep there is NO REQUIREMENT to call your self a CB RADIO REPAIRMAN Back in the 60's - 70's you had to have a 2nd class or better to work on any radio you had to take a test in front of the FCC ....Then in 1982 that changes with the GROL and the FCC droping the requirement for even that.

Worse yet the repairman/tech is no longer held for screwing up your radio YOU ARE ... Yep if the FCC walks in and hits you with a fine YOU not the tech are going to have to pay it .....

Fact is you are at the mercy of these people they take your money and many times mess up a radio and under most state laws you have no recorse ..... how do you go after someone who there is no standard for

Sadly there is not going to ever be a license requirement again and under federal law a state can't regulate 2 way radio ..... your stuck ....

 

Oh well, it is what is! Don't see any change in the future........Besides most of the Hams I know who work on CBs won't do any tuning on them. If you know what you are doing, you can improve the performance on any radio with a little fine tuning.......why wouldn't you????? I've had two friends that were Hams and had shops, one of them a real honest to goodness electronics dealership. He was the Motorola guy around here for years. He would fix your CB if it was broke, but he wouldn't even attempt to tune it! He didn't really like CB, and admitted it.

 

Hummmm With 1500 ICOMS here I can't remember when I needed to tune one ...... must be a CB thing ....

 

Poor man I worked on them about 20 years ago then we got REAL radios ...

 

Off topic a bit but I would like someone or a shop to take a look at what is wrong with my setup and tune it/give it a bit more distance. Topeka/KC/DFW/Chicago - somewhere in the middle states. Problem I have now, I can hear within about a half mile (that's it) and no one can hear me... Never worked with the dual antenna setup before. Single antenna I was good for about 5-7 miles with this radio and cheap freighshaker antenna.

Kw t660, cobra 29ltd - thinking about getting rid of this cb also.

 

Something is wrong I can work 1/2 mile with a 2 watt 440 mhz hand held radio .....


Since you cant hear or be heard I would start with checking the antenna can you swap it with a another? I have seen firesticks/hamsticks go bad where the spyroraped wire connects to the bottom stud.

 

If its a cophased setup, I swap one antenna or have to do both? Don't even know if it's really cophased properly from KW. The guy that had this truck before, had an extra wire running - not sure what's its for, no power going to it.


When I do the test function on the radio, power is good but antenna fails - I'm starting to think its the cables...
