Without reading the thread I'll give my one story: In about 1986, a cop there told me he knew I had a gun in the truck. I shake my head "no" and he looks at me like I'm an idiot and says, "If you do shoot someone, kill 'em. I don't need the paperwork."
And he walked off. I'm like...wha'...???
edit: ok, I got curious and read the thread. It's changed somewhat for the better. But I'll bet they put that fence up for a reason!

My Dad worked for the Banana Distributor located across the street from the gate from '73-'76 and I would ride with him in the summer months and during school breaks. He would deadhead to various piers along the east coast and bring bananas back. As is the nature of the business, we would come and go at all hours of the day and night and that neighborhood was literally a "zoo".
There would be abandoned cars dragged to the middle of the street to slow trucks down and set the driver up to be robbed.
One time my Dad sent me out to the truck to get his cigarettes and as I was climbing in the driver's door a kid my age (about 13) was climbing in the passenger door after breaking the window. We scared the crap out of each other, he took off and I ran back into the diner.
Hookers in groups of 4-5 on every corner would roll up their halter tops to expose their chests and roll them back down when the cops came.
There was once a dead body laying in the median strip on Halleck St for almost an hour before the cops came to check it out. And this was all business as usual back then! You may talk about it for a day or two, but then forget about it because you witnessed or experienced something else equally bizarre.
One thing was better back then. You used to be able to make the left onto Hunts Point Ave after exiting the Sheridan Expwy (895) and emerging from under the EL. It was a more direct route but it left you vulnerable to a barrage of lumpers that would climb up on your truck as you waited to make the left. As was already mentioned by a few posters, the truck route is very well marked but would suggest that you use only truck routing software if you want to have directions handy.
I went through the neighborhood a few years ago during a visit to the city and was amazed at how it's changed. While it still an undesireable section of the city it appears to be a much cleaner and safer place to deliver to than it was 30+ years ago. -
it don't matter to me i'll go anywhere. a dollars a dollar, if your wheels r turning....

Was only at Hunts Point once, in '81. The load was refused. Wasn't that bad as I remember. Heck, Bruce's Truck Stop/Bakersfield,Ca and Vanco/Stockton,Ca are a lot scarier.

It's a total pain in the azzzz. It's not a lot of room there or getting there and more then half the truckers there don't know how to back up so don't be surprised if some of them offer you money to back it up for them because they still don't know how to do it or are to nervous. But yeah it's nyc so yeah not a lot of room and trust me you will never want to go back there most likely. But i would go back there if it's payed good lol.

Getting to Hunt's Point is the easy part. Getting out of there back onto the G Washington is the pain in the ###.
