I can tell you, from my experience that no driver is truly ready when they are on their own the first time. It is something we have all dealt with. Nothing can prepare a person for the first time they get lost in a 75 ft truck on a side street at 3:00 AM on a dark night looking for a shipper. There is no one to bail you out and you have to learn to safely deal with the situation.

    Dumdriver and pattyj Thank this.

Is'nt that the truth though. My first load was going to Canada I had no idea what to do and the QUALCOMM was so intimidating.I asked many many drivers for help with QUALCOMM,routing, map reading you name it.I actually felt like all the training I had went out the window with my first load.

It can be frightening, but you would not have grown as a driver if you had someone in the sleeper to wake up and ask questions.

Yeah, that's what he though, that's why he's still with him over two weeks later. Actually we were thinking since his truck didn't have pink drapes that it was a bad deal but that was just the first red flag.

As a previous trainer here at Swift I can tell you that after 200 hours he is not really comfortable going at alone he can talk to driver services and tell them his concerns and they probably will place him with another mentor until he is comfortable with going at it alone, or give him some extra training in house. They will work with him.

Thank you but, once again, he is comfortable. If he wasn't that is what he would do. He has been on his own for the last 2 weeks. His mentor is either sleeping or on the phone with his wife while he drives. His first mentor begged his DM not to take him off his truck telling him that he is the best driver he has ever had and that he is ready to be on his own already and that was after a week.
