Today I ran westbound under that bridge a couple of times in light rain with a light wind from the south. You can still see the big divots from the incident last week.
That got me to thinking how I would have handled the situation, knowing what I know. Last week there was a pretty good wind from the north. You are traveling Northwest as you approach the overpass (where Business 40 merges onto I-40) JUST as the freeway turns directly west.
Here's the main issue here: with a hard north wind you approach the overpass and the wind disappears as the overpass blocks the wind. There's slight banking to help stabilize you in the turn, but as soon as you clear the bridge a hard north wind hits you HARD as it is channeled by the overpass.
In an ice storm, if you aren't aware of how terrain affects wind, you can quickly get your trailer pushed around. The initial jacknife was likely an over correction responding to the push of the wind.
