I-70 MD shut down for 2 hours over turbine blade

I've never seen a blade in two directions of travel before. Seems bonkers to me. Anybody?

I’ve only heard of it happening once in Texas.

 

I believe I saw that on YouTube. Looked like a real headache for those involved.

The pics and videos don’t show what happened. The news says the blade broke loose. The puzzling thing is how the back of the trailer crossed the median. Usually, when you lose control of the back, the rear flips, creating so much torque that it powerslams the tractor into the ground. This one to me looks like the rear steering took off and crossed the median. At highway speeds, we always locked the rear steering. Maybe Big Ronnie can see something that I don’t since he’s pulled blades nearly 300ft long.

 

Twice in Texas. US259, driver missed a turn, tried a u turn and got stuck on the shoulder, blocked all lanes. US84 towards Lubbock, driver missed turn, ran into construction. Traffic completely blocked.

 

ah, this is my best guess based on what O can see in the video.

it looks like the blade is on a schnable and dolly set up. So, the blade will act as the trailer - the schnable neck will hold the front of the blade in a frame and the rear of the blade will sit on a steerable dolly in rack on a turntable with restricted motion (maybe +20 degree to - 20 degrees). The air and hydraulic es will hang from the blade. Therefore, no trailer beams connect the neck me the wheel area.

so my guess is that something in the steering dolly broke or was accidentally steered off course . Sat highway speed it will get away really fast.

having no beams saved it from overturning or smashing into a guard rail or obstruction.

I have delivered to sites where we set up like this intentionally to get to a stupidly of site. I know coming out of a losing site North Dakota guys used to have to do it using the highway and an access road - but O never loaded at that site.

The schnauble type trailers…did they have that auto steer capabilities? I’ve never pulled one but seen them in action. It’s calibrated to the 5th wheel. Had a friend deliver 800 blades without issue, but had an auto steer take off and dropped into a ditch and the cab got power slammed. Company blamed the driver. Company blamed the steer. Both were solid.

I had auto steer on my temisko tower schnable trailer - it would be the same for the. Led version..

I run auto steer on my Faymonville and it is fantastic - it can do about 90% of what we do but I still run a full time Steerman every where I go even empty because I do not stretch and regularly run at least 100’ of trailer
