Con-Way Freight & Con-Way (CW) Truckload are indeed two different things entirely but housed under the same company. CW Truckload is the OTR division for CW and is actually the old CFI, which CW bought back in 2007. CW Freight actually has over 400 terminals across the country. As a CW truckload driver you can expect to pull a lot of loads from these freight terminals and take them to other termials. I did a lot of relays of the freight trailers too. For example, one driver would pick up a trailer out of Roanoke, VA and take it to Atlanta, GA and drop the trailer. Another driver would be waiting there to take that trailer and continue on down into Tampa or Miami. These loads were usually very tight on the time requirements to get them there so you couldn't stop and take a 2 hour break at the buffet. I actually looked forward to these loads because you usually got to the freight terminal the night before and dropped your empty trailer and could then bobtail into town and eat somewhere other than a truckstop, watch a movie, etc.
CW is a "forced dispatch" company. That means that if they send an order to deliver into NY City, guess where you're going. You can always ask to get a different load - and it sometimes works, but is rare.
I only had a couple complaints about CW with the chief one being that they really stay on their drivers about fuel mileage. It's totally understandable but during the summer month of 09 I was running along I-10 and staying in the SE about 95% of the time. You know, the areas where it's 95 deg at midnight. Well, for some reason I like to get some sleep without seating my butt off all night so my fuel mileage feel below their specs and so they were always on me about it. That is one of a few reasons I left.
All in all, CW Truckload is a great company with great potential to keep you running. They are not a company that'll try to babysit you either. Do your job, don't compain too much, stay legal and safe, and you should be able to stay there for as long as you want to. Oh, and watch that MPG.Mike' Thanks this. -
One more thing. I remember seeing, on several occasions, newly hired drivers at some of the CW Freight terminals and some had just gotten their CDL. So, I'd go down to that Toledo terminal and talk to them. Who knows, you may be able to get a driving job without actually having to go OTR. That would be a sweet deal.
Mike' Thanks this. -
Needless to say, I am not going to just dismiss them, because they may have something to offer that nobody else can. Keep in mind...if they were the only ones to say yes, I would be starting a "WERNER IS GOOD...WERNER IS GREAT!" thread. lmao... -
I figurede they said YES

See Mike, we told you to keep your head up. LOL. Now you have some choices so its time to narrow them down.

I have heard a LOT of great things about BTC. They run steel in the SE and some Midwest, and they do totally flatbed, which is what I wanted to do. Also, they say that you will be home most weekends, and can expect to miss around 10-12 weekends a year. Even if the weekend isnt 5pm Friday to 8am Monday...which it isntI would be okay with getting home for a day or two every 7-10 days.
Things are looking up. -
yea my weekends use to consist of about 24 hrs. am saturday till am sunday. Till they changed HOS 36 hour rule. Now I get at least 36 hrs at home before heading back out. LOL.

I know when this first started coming out about fuel milage back in the 70's we would really mess with their heads and buy a couple gallons of fuel. Would that work now? And besides what could they do if you kept for fuel score high? I know they can look and into the truck and tell but it's all numbers right? Just want to know because it's been so many years ago I had to deal with that.
