This is a direct result of individuals adopting the philosophy of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead", itself a poorly exposed derivative of Nietzsche's "will to power" that misses the entire point.

If we encourage a society that derides the idea of community and embraces a sense that "others" have a negligible value this type of behavior will become the norm.

To crib Janis Joplin "Freedom is just another word for 'nothing left to lose'" - when an individual can see no incentive to working within the system he sees no incentive to maintain the system and will actively attempt to destroy the system.

 

Nowhere in Atlas Shrugged does Ayn Rand advocate directly victimizing ANYONE. Let alone theft and murder. The core tenet of the book is alluded to in the title, and explained within the book. Atlas is holding the entire world on his shoulders... what would happen if he just shrugged it off? And so, within the book, several heads of various industry grow tired of having exorbitant taxes levied on them, while being ostracized by the very people their taxes benefitted. So, encouraged by an inventor that had his intellectual property stolen, they one by one withdraw from the system that has been taking from them.

I am not saying that Ayn Rand is a shining example of how to live life, as she had some deep personal flaws. (Who doesn't?) But your comment is a gross mischaracterization of the philosophy of objectivism.

 

Give me 500 words reconciling Adam Smith and Ayn Rand with a focus on the role of labor. Then we'll talk.

Also, just because some tenets of their beliefs may seem to clash, it is up to the INDIVIDUAL to reconcile those differences within their own minds. I don't know how Adam Smith got dragged into a conversation about YOUR disingenuous blaming of some ######## doing some murdering and robbing on a Philosophy, Author, and book that I can guarantee that they have never even heard of. Also, just because someone may be a capitalist, that does not mean that they walk in lock step with every other capitalist. That is like saying that every communist wants to kill 20 million of their own countrymen.
