I would add to that being in cities around gangs. Kids are so easily influenced and if they grow up without a father figure they find one one way or the other.

Crime is low in poverty stricken rural America.

 

BS, the targets and specific crimes are different, what gets reported is significantly different, but rural impoverished america has a very high crime rate.

Some of us individuals simply prefer to disengage from the system and avoid it as much as possible.

 

"By choosing not to choose you still have made a choice" - sometimes disengaging with the system is actively destroying it - particularly when we are talking about community and treating others with basic dignity.

More to my point - the individuals in this video have no sense of empathy, let alone community. They see no benefit to behaving as rational, productive community members. They can see no path forward, and descend into destructive nihilism. As a society, we have made choices over the last 40 years that have accelerated the growth of this behavior/thought process. Think redirecting money from public transit into road construction; using public funds to subsidize private developments; cutting social services; using police to deal with homelessness and mental health; 'requiring' college degrees for jobs that don't even need a HS education; gerrymandering voting districts; actively disenfranchising voters; having criminal judicial outcomes be directly correlated the wealth of the defendants.

If a person is playing a board game and believes that their opponent is cheating, that person would walk away from the game. When the person isn't allowed to walk away - that's when the table gets flipped.
