thats funny. I had the same problem in California once. The guy loading me wanted me to sit in the truck and I refused wanting to see him load it on the trailer. he was putting the coils in a place that I didn't like as I knew they would be overweight and he insisted on putting them someplace else. I told him to stop, got in the truck and left without the load. My DM had no problem with it either.

I worked for a fltbed op early in my career. The Safety man was a former State Trooper. He said, wrap at least 2 straps around your load and the rest holding it on. If it came loose with straps or, with chains in the headache rack, you would pay. If you had all them on your load the company would pay. They always wanted 2 pairs of straps or chains crossed so that they were hooked on one side went over the load and then passed under to hook on the opposite side so they formed a loop. Never had any load shift using that method.

Interesting but I would like something in the law shown to me where that is specified. It is not up to a State Trooper to decide who pays what or how much no matter how important he thinks he is. Whether a driver has extra chains hanging on his rack or in a box under his bunk makes no difference to whether the load was properly secured or not.

What he posted: The Safety man was a former State Trooper.

Pretty much gives the former smokie bear the power to say how you secure the load.

I did not mean about the company policy but getting fined by State Trooper depending on whether you have extra chains on the truck. Failure to secure a load is failure to secure a load no matter what gear you have hanging on the rack.

Read it again, nowhere was money mentioned in that response. I take the phrase, "You will pay", as you will be written up, or you will likely lose your job, etc. The phrase, "You will pay", seldom means money, when said in conjunction with breaking company policy.

those tubes were light compared to what I haul. it should not be a problem to have enough securement on them. I use what is legallly required, but will put more if I think it needs it. have done that many times. however I haul mainly steel coils. & if the coil requires 3 chains I may use 4 but not 6, in the just in case attitude, I also will not demean anyone who dose. on the pipe I would most likely use 3 -3/8 chains with 9200 wll on binders on each tube, one center, one each end, & 5 4"straps on each.
