I like the harder sole of boots over tennis shoes when walking on gravel and concrete. Reebok and Cintas both had low-top shoes that look more like tennis shoes from the sole up but had a chunkier and slightly stiffer sole from a boot. I thought it was the best option for me for decades. While wearing long pants the hybrid shoe even looks like a boot, unless I raise my pants leg and you see the shoe has nothing above the ankle.

Cintas called their shoes the Air Disk. Just imagine a work boot sole with a tennis shoe upper. It gave maximum foot movement, light weight, and ankle flexibility. Even when I wore boots with a 6 inch rise, I usually only laced them to the top of the foot or bottom of the ankle so I could point my foot up or down as far as the ankle joint allowed without having to fight against a tightly laced boot.
