I got pulled into the Phoenix, Oregon scale for an inspection. Tried to hand him my Oregon permit and he said "I don't care about that. I'm USDOT", then noticed his hat with the USDOT on it. I had no idea they worked the scales. I always thought it was only the state. It was only my third time in the inspection barn in five years so I haven't had many opportunities to find this out.
I didn't know USDOT worked state scales

I had a canadian dot I know from whitehorse yukon inspect me in Tok Alaska, Imagine my surprise when I pilled in toi the super coupe building and seen who it was.
We have a fed dot stationed here, there is one at the San Jon NM scales too. the thing about him is if he writes you up with anything that has a fine attached, he has to hand cuff you and take you to Sante Fe, he can't just give you a ticket and let you go. He usually partners with one of the state guys and lets them write the tickets.Intothesunset, Oxbow and JC1971 Thank this. -
That would be pretty effed up. I'm sure those are some extremely unhappy drivers when that happens.Texas_hwy_287 and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

Probably, but he is a cool dude, and they probably have to mess up pretty bad before he would do that to them. lol

Not all states have actual state employees per say.
Some use dot employees (OR) and highway patrol. (CA)
OR will usually have an orange pickup parked there also. When open.
At the smaller po dunk scales.Intothesunset, JC1971 and Texas_hwy_287 Thank this. -
Ask for his ID and ask him where is his authority to ask you questions.
The us dot does not enforce truck level regulations.lester, Intothesunset and Texas_hwy_287 Thank this. -

They do random visits to scales and do random inspections on trucks. I have one done by them on my truck. It was level 1, in Louisiana, 5 years ago. I have seen them in NM scale last year. They wear different uniform.Intothesunset Thanks this.
