Young man (I assume you are a male), once you finish at the CDL mill, I can suggest some on-line business courses, for you, to bring you into the real world. I've been hearing your original argument, for over 30 years now and it still is no truer than it was in 1979.

Come up with a universal definition of cheap freight. If anyone can do that, I'll put their name up for a Nobel Prize and a free Tootsie Roll.

If you think brokers have it so easy with no overhead and easily rake in half or more what loads pay as a matter of routine why don't you open a brokerage and make the easy money? If you think shippers never pay terrible rates because they can, even without the broker middleman, I have a bridge I want to sell you.

I'm grateful to get $1 per mile out of Billings, MT. for wood chips. Then again going in with a round trip rate makes it icing on the cake.

To me "cheep freight" = not covering my cost of operation. Figure out your cost of operation first. Then figure out what your willing to haul, for what price. This topic has been "griped" about too long.

The example of getting out of Cut Bank, Montana: I would not go there unless the rate of the trip going there would compensate for either deadheading out to decent paying freight, or balance out closer lower paying freight.

I have refused loads to Edmonton, AB several times for this reason. But a few times it was worth doing.

Not only do I not haul cheap freight, I also live by the rule that there is no such thing as a backhaul!

From what I've seen...and I'm well aware my experience pales in comparison to alot of folks here and elsewhere......cheap freight is always going to be around, I suspect it's always been that way and will remain. However, there are good rates out there too!

I found a good gig so I'm lucky, I may be hauling cheap freight, but I'm being paid a liveable wage to do it, I think therein lies the difference.
