I've always logged 15 for pretrip, and no time for post trip but flagged it as a PTI to cover my six. 12+ years and never an issue.

Tell you what , before I even move my truck I do a pretrip and when I park I do a post trip , the company I work for wants it this way so I oblige as they own the equipment . Also I am responsible for the equipment if its OK to drive or not , I make it a habit to do a pre trip on every trailer I move I don't care if its only 5 miles down the street , if the tandems fall out who is there to blame but yourself , if that were to be the case . The only thing I think is a total waste of time is doing a post trip on your truck that you will pre trip when you wake the next day . There may or may not be a law that states if you do or don't have to do it in a certain time , but for the sake of yourself and others around you , don't you want to look at your equipment before putting yourself or others in harms way ? Just my 2 cents .
Lonesome, DoneYourWay and snowman01 Thank this. -
I had this discussion many years ago with a scale in Colorado. The DOT was pretty cool about it as I was showing a 15 min inspection before I drove every day but he was quite clear and printed out the law that it is required at the completion of each driving day not before driving each morning. He was the only one I have run across in over 20 years that pointed this out, however. Every other inspection never cared as long as i showed one once a day and for each trailer I dropped if I did drop and hooks. I doubt your going to win this one and I think you should have just sucked it up. I mean, really, you lost your job over 5 min???

Why was the OP late getting back the day before? Hanging out at truck stop? Took a nap? We don't have the whole picture.
All this over 15 minutes? Only 10 minutes away from the postal dock?
If I can make 2 hours work surely you can make 15 minutes work. Auditors usually have a 1 hour leeway on time stamps.
I could see raising heck if your company is constantly pushing you. But to help your company out in a tight spot once in awhile you can to be flexible and creative.
I guess the boss went postal?
You get in the habit of doing post trips you don't know if someone pulled your fifth wheel or a tire went flat while you were sleeping. It makes more sense to do it prior to driving.
DoneYourWay, Rogerthat and RevKev Thank this. -

Sorry, rules only say an inspection REPORT. Not an inspection. Nor does it specify a time from other than your inspections are to be recorded as "ON DUTY".
Small nuances, but there never the less.
So you could do your inspection during your fueling period, while the truck was being unloaded/loaded etc. All times that you are actually "ON DUTY" as well.
All you HAVE to do at the beginning is review the report of the previous user to verify the equipment is safe to operate.
At the end of the trip, you have to complete said "Driver Vehicle Inspection Report".
It's never been said you don't have to do a report or an inspection.
It's been said...
Show in the regulation where it says it must be 15 minutes at the end of the day. -
No they weren't. The driver that worked yesterday told me they were okay! I seen his DVIR.
