I got fired, what should I do for a reference?

    Uh, you do realize that it is called "unemployment insurance" for a reason, don't you? It's a part of your weekly payroll tax. You pay for it.

    This. A company is not going to say why they fired you unless it's for something criminal, and they have either a conviction or a written confession. Usually when another company inquires about a former employee, all they will do is reveal the hiring date and the date when the employee left. Companies hate being sued by their former employees, so they try not to give them a reason to.
