The one I used had a hard drive in it and could record up to 14 hours on the internal hard drive. It is a digital camcorder, if you want to get the recording off it you just hook it up to your computer and upload it.

You don't need much storage - an accident takes what, a couple of minutes start to finish? Make sure you get enough resolution to be able to read a license plate...
-
While the accident doesn't take but a very short time to happen, how do you know WHEN it is going to happen so you can turn the camera on. What he is talking about here, is having a camera mounted and recording all the time, so that if an accident or incident happens, it is automatically recorded. You wouldn't even need to review the recording unless there has been an incident. Then you can pretty much figure the time span involved, and just watch that portion.Roadmedic Thanks this.

Thankyou Big Don, i'm not very good at explaing myself, so thankyou, but i'm looking into the world, were someday , drivers will buy a manniquin for this purpose too, the head will swival around 180 degrees , just like a real person , with the eyes being mini cams and can rig the ears up too hear sound, so the next big crash , you can see time stamp , the crash sound and her belly could spill out a printout , now if the gov get hold of this, they would sell this back too us poor truckers for $3 grand, but someboby stepped up to the plate, i think we can get build one for $456 bucks, money well spent, just a thought, and yes i know the coops will have a feild day with this one, Everett,

I know exactly what he means. What you need is a continuous recording mode... it gets full, and then starts dumping the older material. Just turn the thing off when the accident is done. Back in tape recorder days they used to call that continuous loop mode.
Back to resolution - if you can't read the license plate whatever you record is worthless. -
Truck number, trailer number and the signage on the truck will confirm the hit.
Time is another issue that safety can track and get. -
I was thinking 4-wheeler, but just the same... you have to be able to distinguish those numbers. Going with the cheapest camera you can find ususally doesn't get you much resolution. If you can't tell what those numbers are, all the video of an accident in the world isn't going to get you anywhere.

Yeah, now if there was some way to have it activated in truck stops when it sees white or orange trucks....
-
Don't forget the ones painted nasty blue-grey!
