Saying ridgeline is one of the smartest people here would be my guess. I'd say he's 50/50. When it come to the business side he usually is spot on. When it comes to driving however, well.. Let's just say there is likely a reason he hung up his keys and leave it at that.

I meant in general overall knowledge. He and I go at it in the political section. I know how smart he is.

Also, we were talking about the business side, in which Ridge has tons of experience. I was just merely pointing out to the op that he wasn't going to find any better advice than what was given to him.

Yeah zvar, I retired for a reason, having an injury from working where I can't legally drive a truck and I am still recovering which will take me into 2019. Otherwise I would be still working and happy about it. Being hurt sucks, recovery sucks.

the business thing is just a matter of opinion. For those issues people don't agree with, that's alright, every business is different, every person has a different need and if one thing doesn't work then another can, however I've learned that business isn't static. You got to change with time on what to do in your business.

    By the way, thanks crappie.

So basically, what I got out of this is if you simply bought your own truck for cheap (Like 5k-10k from an auction). Then simply registered it as private use and then rented a trailer, this whole situation would be irrelevant and easily explainable. I think the thing that's holding people up it the rented of a vehicle registered as a commercial vehicle and using it as private.

I rented a commercial trailer (40ft gooseneck) for my household goods that I pulled with my 2500HD. I have a CDL and my combined weight was WELL OVER 10,001 lbs. However, private use and private stuff. So I was fine, in your case the onlything that changes is the truck you're driving.

A semi driving as a pick-up persay attracts a lot more attention as they typically are held to a different standard,so I understand the concern. Personally, I keep emails and contacts of every high up person I talked to the process. So if I got himmed up by someone who didn't understand the process,I'd call the person I talked to originally on the spot (after clearing it with them before hand anyway). Outside of that and lack of experice, I think you'll be fine.

Sound like a lot of stress and risk taking to save $2400.
My bet is when it comes time to rent the truck you find more problems and it's a no go.

I have a fleeting suspicion that there's more to this endeavour than we are being led to believe....

The whole "I love a challenge" argument is not convincing me....

    I could be wrong though...

I li,e the way you think. I got my cdl just for a couple months of adventure for me and my wife. But since we've been doing this , 45 days now, we decided to sell our business and we're now renovating our kitchen to get out home ready to sell. It has been all the adventure we thought it would be and more. IMO the trick is keeping all the small issues you run into daily in perspective. I have to remind myself that these are the adventure not problems I have to deal with.

How close to your house can you get the trailer? No ramp, you're going lift everything into the trailer.
Do you have furniture pad and straps, the trailer will need logistics post to strap the load in.

If not loaded properly it will look like it was loaded with a front end loader and no HHG company to file a claim for damage.

If you want the experience with your son then rent the straight truck and take him along. It would still be a memorable trip to ride across a nice stretch of country with you. Who cares if it cost a little more to make two trips and buy some extra plane tickets . I know I would not take my son on the trip in someone else's truck just for the chance get some wheel time. 2 to a truck can get pretty tight 3 would be torcher especially for your son. I also recall mention of putting a Lincoln in the trailer how would you do that without ramps?
