Yesterday was a better day. I was using a standard, tho, so my clutch leg was starting to hurt!! When I parked the truck between two trucks, it spasmed and I killed the engine.

I was able to back up, between four cones, and then move over and put the trailer in the "dock" with little, teeny moves of the steering wheel. Different instructor and he would move the dock over a little each time. Then I worked at docking without my "lane" and I was doing pretty good. Was even able to pull forward, realign the cones with my back corner, and then back up. Regular instructor said that on Monday we will start on the 90, but start with a 45.

The reason he said "x minutes" is because Conway tests you with a stop-watch and you have 10 minutes to get the truck docked.

Otherhalf, I LOVE the banana idea. I can see where I need to start turning, but I seem to have a not-so-good depth perception.

Having never attended a school what is a "switch lane"?

And imagine that cone is a wall made of C-4 that will blow when impacted.Cuz you run over a BMW you might as well burn that license.

When backing up.. you will go from one lane to the other ...they did away with the serpentine back.. and that is a good thing... how many times would you really use it..

Ok.Now I'm gonna sound really silly.

    What's a serpentine back?

Geez grow up on a farm and you miss all kinds of things:biggrin_25526:

Never had fancy names. We always dumped whatever in whatever bin,or silo.Silage season you had to back in off road around barn down the hill and behind the parlor:biggrin_2551: Oh and watch the cows:biggrin_2554: The sight of backing trucks is kinda like a cow zapper:biggrin_25510:

Never seemed like that big a deal.Put the trailer where you want it:biggrin_25517:

A serpentine is where you go in and out around cones set in a straight line. I think I did that on my very first day in a truck, never hit a cone......and every time I would go down that lane with the cones I wanted to serpentine because it was such fun....LOL I even did it backwards and didn't hit any cones.

When I was learning how to go around corners, I knocked down a stack of barrels. Then I had to do an accident report which stated "While attempting to make a right hand turn, I nudged the BMW in the oncoming lane with my front bumbper, knocked down the power pole with the rear of my trailer, which fell on the Lexus." That was the last time I hit the barrells....LOL

    10-4.

Maybe I should start a driving school during silage season.A month and a half of chasing choppers, unloading in baggers and silos 16 hr days:biggrin_25518:

By the time they got done OTR would be a breeze.

Good luck, and try to avoid those Beemers and Lexus':biggrin_255:

I want to thank all of you who gave me advise on this. BIG HUGS

I started out in the big gravel lot where my instructor laid out an arc with a rope. Did 5-6 with the standard and a 48' trailer. Then we switched to the automatic with a 53' trailer, a tighter arc, and I did it another 5-6 times. Put it in there everytime, not hitting any cones, and with only an average of 5 pullups.

Tomorrow we'll do one session on the pad where we take our test (with the parameters) and if I do as good then as I did today, then we'll start working on the parallel. We're leaving the switchbacks til last since that's were I was having the most problems.
