It's o.k. big brother will still be looking over your shoulder with the E-logs, Tractor tracking devices, Satellite tracking devices and monitors for trailers and a whole gamete of other new and improved regulations.

Seeing the land = Seeing a quarter mile strip on either side of the interstate and the back side of a bunch of blighted industrial areas.

The only way to know if it is right for you is to try it.

With an established home life I would recommend you figure out a long term goal that gets you home as you and your spouse require (regional/local/dedicated). Then drive your new career to get to that goal. It may take a year or two to get there, so establish a plan and look for the company now that you want to be at then. Groom yourself to go there. Just like any other career.

Prepare for the worst; hope for the best. It aint all bad. At least my cube has a view that changes every few miles...

I am sure everyone goes through it.. whether they think through it before the set out on the lovely journey or at a truck stop hundreds of miles from home in a truck with a stranger..

I would not call you pathetic.. I would call you wise cor thinking through a major decision.. and doing so before you make a huge leap or investment.. honestly, there are many who rush in and then start to think it through.. but,, they
signed a contract and will owe money that they didn't have, still don't and may never..

One thing to keep in mind.. is, the decision doesn't have to be made this week.. or even next.. so, you not only have the time to think through it... It is wise to do so.. the expression is.. fools rush in.. so again, you not pathetic and your not being foolish..
It is good that you are talking this over with your partner.. and good that you are here on this forum seeking insight..
Get a note book and write down your pros and cons.. you concerns and hopes.. and not just once, but a few times.. it is easier to sort out on paper then in your head and heart.. then, break it down into smaller pieces.. like, your relationship, write out your pros and cons and all.. and, ways to deal with it.. write out a plan for your success and how you will get through obstacles and things..

When, I was on the road I did some site seeing on my layovers.. I would get a cab and go see some neat things.. it did cost money.. but, I budgeted for it.. with time and money management.. you can do more then just sit is your truck at a truck stop.. now,#I did not enter truck driving broke.. and I knew my training pay and first year wages were minimal.. now, that I am re-entering, again I have saved up money in order to consider a career change... Knowing I won't make a a lot of money from the start..

Robertson County and Davidson County as an adult. My father and his brother were some of the original moonshine runners throughout the Southeast before & after WWII. My Mother made him quit not long after he got out of the Army after the war ended. After that he had a steady job and just part time modified car engines for the guys that kept running whiskey. Take care, it's 1 am here in the Orient & beddy-bye time.

Well.. maybe I am an odd egg.. but, I do enjoy the scenery out the Windows while rolling along.. I live in the Midwest and honestly I never tire of seeing mountains, rolling hills, flat lands,... Yeah, Iowa can vet a little long with all the cornfields.. but, I still prefer it to stationary walls..

I like waking up in one state, eating lunch in another and falling asleep in yet another..

Now, it is true, I can't just go where I want when I want, and I have work to do along the way.. but.. to me it is worth it.. I find it easier work than construction, or some of the other jobs I have held.. and at least the scenery does change..

Except in Nebraska! From the west end to the east end at 70 mph on a bike that would cruise at 120 and still have lots of pep left...:yes2557:
Longest day/ride of my life! And I didn't even have a radio! Two days across Texas actually feels shorter... :biggrin_25517:
Y'all take care and drive safe.

You should trust them, I watch over people. Elogs, OER data, speeding reports. You truck is one big awesome data recorder that sends all this information in for people like me to break down and make judgments upon. Every company does this a bit different, key factors with us would be have a positive attitude and work with us. We understand that pushing the limits is an admirable trait, however it is our job to ensure compliance, and try to keep you safe. Because we aren't out there with you we'll give you the benefit of the doubt, until you develop a pattern or if you just a ##### there isn't much we can do, or would even want to.
