New guy here and I don't expect an automatic gear box. I'm not the best shifter but it's coming along nicely. I wouldn't mind a trainer for a couple of days but I'm a fast learner. As for pay, I'm a rookie who is currently making zero. So they could pay me 30k and I would be happy...at least until I build up some experience. Now with that said, I want complain if they throw in Satellite TV/Radio :smt003

Well, since you want us to answer, I'd say one thing we want is much, much less "super trucker" hero stories about how rough it was back when and the related BS you tough guys seem to enjoy dishing out. So, did you drive barefoot in winter to and from school, up hill both ways or what? Who gives a rat's patooti if you were on your own 6 days or 6 weeks from school? Do you want a medal?

I for one think that is short sided thinking.
My trainer taught me a lot and I learned a lot on my own just driving with him in the right seat to help guide me.
Bad trainers are a waste of time granted but a trainer who cares (if they don't they shouldn't be there) can help a new driver a lot.
Isn't it better to have newbs out there with at least a few weeks of learning with an experienced driver under their belts rather than just getting thrown out there to make mistakes and learn on their own, they can be a hazard to themselves and others on the road as well as make us all look bad in the eyes of the general public.
I'm pretty green yet at 4 months but I get around pretty well,I had a great trainer who probably saved me a few mistakes had I not been out with him a couple weeks before going solo.
I think it not only helped build my confidence but also made me a safer driver when I soloed out, that's pretty important for us all is it not?
I think every new driver should be out with a trainer for a while,I also think trainers should probably be certified somehow and many of the companies should be a lot better about who is doing their training.

I agree - real world driving with an experienced trainer is invaluable; gain experience, builds confidence, and reduces anxiety associated with newly learned skills.

Having no actually real road experience - i.e. loaded, time constraints, new equipment, when to gas up, when to sleep, etc - and having the company say "your in Boston, take this load to Fresno CA" can be a recipe for disaster.

Many of the drivers who think "throw them the keys and go" learned to drive in a much different era then 2011. Today, much of the country is over populated, tons more cars and trucks on the road, many more regulations.....

Granted, I know you faced your own obstacles too but in this day in age with load values, people trying to sue you/company if you even tap there car bumper; having a training period is a good idea in my opinion.
