I wonder if this new export radio will hurt the sales of Stryker radios, and possibly hard drives business, since I believe the radio is mostly surface mount technology.

It's a new Anytone radio with DSP. Guys who have already bought this radio, say that the transmit and receive is extremely good with just the factory alignment. Sounds like no cb shop is needed after you purchase the radio.

Edit: I found this review from CB radio magazine.

It is a good radio, I have four of them ready to go into trucks and used one in my beater for a week now.

That's good to know. It must be a good radio if you have 5 of them... ha. I can't remember what the latest firmware update does to the radio, but it sounds like it made some huge improvements. I think they made a huge step in making the radio except firmware updates to change the way the radio works. Sure beats having to mod the radio by replacing parts.

I like it, it preforms as well as a couple of my other radios when bench testing and live use. I think it comes close to my Johnson rig which is one of the best made.

There are a few things I don't like about it, it is an all-encompassing radio with Echo and talkback, plus a few other things that should be dropped and other features added.

What those other features are to be added, well I don't know.

The Echo and the PA to me is a big waste of front panel space.

I got a deal on the five, $125 each for four and the fifth one was in the box so technically I didn't buy five. The distributor said to keep it and do a review which my install guy already did.

That's great that they gave you one radio to review. I thought the same thing about the echo and roger beep. I assume that since the looks of the radio resembles the cobra 148, they were targeting the cb'ers market, and had to include the echo and talk back features.

Model Number: ARES II, ARES PLUS, SS-480, SS-24, Predator,QT40.

It looks like these are the same radio with different features or names?

Also I read (not sure if it's true), that Anytone might come out with a base station radio next year. I thought that would be great, I think Galaxy needs some competition for it's 959 pretending to be a base station radio. Plus the 2547 is way over priced to me.

Edit: sorry, I probably should have started a new thread on this new radio, rather than get this thread off topic.

Why would surface mount technology hinder mark's ability to work on it? That's become his specialty since he bought his hot air Reflow station. The only problem I see with the radio is the same problem I see with all these other "export" radios and that's the mismatched finals.
It would be a much better radio if it had a single final. Linearity is the key. Surface mount components are great in a big truck. They're not so great for radio hacks trying to extort money from you.

Many of the people that pass on by 19 are rather short and sweet. Heard some folks from California all the way on the East coast slide in respectfully and slide on out. Others use different channels to promote their stuff without tying up channel 19. The channel 6 crew is on 6 for a reason. There’s that respect by many for all of us relaying bear reports, traffic conditions and other road hazards.

You always get the one or 2 idiots rambling on, but even they give it up and move along. Maybe if your friend went to another channel, people might respect him more. But as it goes, so many people are turned off by hard drive’s practices, they wouldn’t even take a radio that he was giving away for free. It just goes that way sometimes.

The real reason I brought up the smt, was because you don't need to replace parts or remove parts with this radio. The firmware updates will take care of that. No tech needed.

As far as mismatched finals, that's not a big deal. This radio has 3 IFR 520's mosfet, and there is nothing wrong with these as a driver and final, as long as you don't abuse them. You may have noticed that this radio is really a lower powered radio compared to most export radios, so these mosfets should last a very long time just as long as the tech will be honest with the customer, and explain why he won't crank every watt out of them. Plus I don't think these radios are going to show much swing, so that is probably one more thing to be honest about. Also it sounds like they already are set for 100% modulation, so the NPC should be left off if the mic gain is turned clear up. I believe this info is according to CB Radio Magazine review. Another impressive thing is that this radio has NRC, which sounds great from what I have heard. Even without hard drive touching the radio.

As far as a tech extorting money from a guy who bought this radio, how much is hard drive going to charge? It would probably cost you more in mailing the radio, than what it would cost to expand the frequencies and changing few things in the firmware. Since this is like a software driven radio, all is needed is a Anytone usb cable, and the Software also from Anytone. Cb Radio Magazine has a great video on updating the firmware and changing some things in the radio to suit your taste. Again, no tech needed. The only reason to open the cover is to move the little PC jumper to pins 2&3 so you can talk on 11 meters. Again no tech needed. I've never been tempted to buy an export radio to talk on 11 meters, but I have to admit, this one is very tempting.

What kind of sound quality and range are the Anytones getting? These sound like a no nonsense out of the box option. As for updates, is it plug in a computer, update and go?
